Cheap Food

Recommended Posts

Most farms where I am are a single labour unit......lots of them old boys in their 60s and 70s, none of them are anything like well off.

If it was a question of just breeding you stock and getting the right money for it then they would be doing it.

They don't spend Christmas Day sat in a bath full of money, throwing out tenants into the snow and shooting dog walkers!......

We buy our meat from the butcher that breeds and raises the pigs, his beef comes from a friend who breeds and raises his own cattle and the chickens from a third farmer who does the same, he only buys

You could always withdraw your support and not buy any of their products

fordson, can I ask what qualifies you to even be commenting on this thread? You've clearly never done a days farm work in your life! Have you ever actually met a farmer? This is a hunting site so I'd

What I cannot understand is how some people cannot understand that the government is subsidising the supermarkets not the farmer. Yes the farmer gets a subsidy but it is only the difference between what he should get on an open market and what the supermarkets are paying. Meanwhile the supermarkets get cheaper meat and sell at a premium.

We have a small butcher in the village and it is cheaper to buy meat off him than any of the big supermarkets.

I used to get all my meat at farm shop butchers, people I knew assumed I was paying a premium & couldn't see the sense in what was doing? but it was often cheaper & better quality.......& you talk to somebody!

You can look up the subsidies paid to individual farmers using the search bar on this site http://farmsubsidy.openspending.org/

Are subsidies are just one facet of the 'funny money' economy ? I believe the average household food bill represented something like a third of household income after the war, much more than today. Land prices mean small farmers could make a lot of money by selling up, and can borrow money very cheaply against their land, but the income from actual farming (even with subsidies) isn't amazing.

That's the highest one I found for shap abbey? And that's in euros, and admittedly that's bloody good lump! But that's not what they got every year is it? There's some years they got nothing and others that were actually in the minus? (If I'm reading it correct) but regardless of that, it goes to show that they are an exception rather than a rule.

no i dont think there in th minority at all,all you here from farmers is what a struggle it is,you are getting massive amounts of the tax payers money,it dosnt have to be a big farm to get 100,000 pound a year, then you get extra help with fencing and hedges or walls, upto 80percent grant on buildng maintenance or new build, you get that much money you get contractors to do your work for you,and please answer me here, all the figures the amounts you got were available for public viewing, as it should be being the tax payers money, why has this stopped,

I couldnt tell you why it stopped because i dont know bit could you pm me a bank statement so i can have a look at what you make please

80% a bit exagerated and we dont get contractors because we have the skills to do things ourselves. Why do you have such a dim few on farmers? you sound like the antis ill informed and un educated on the subject.

are you saying tax payers arnt entitled to know were its being spent,i know 1 million a year is paid to one lowther estate farm each year, now that is justone of many of thier farms, imagine what the church gets and all the dukes and earls, its nt right, most farmers dont deserve it.

like i said you dont understand. You cant compare a massive estate like lowther that owns loads of farms and houses to a normal farmer. Lowthers own farm is 3000 acres of lowland by its self not adding everything else they own.

fordson, can I ask what qualifies you to even be commenting on this thread? You've clearly never done a days farm work in your life! Have you ever actually met a farmer? This is a hunting site so I'd assume you have probably tried asking for permission at some point? We're so arragont and condescending then? One of my best mates leases a farm from lowther I can tell you now that ain't all rainbows and butterfly's! It's not a perticularly big farm but you try working (at least) 12 hours a day 365 days a year! And he can't afford to employ anybody. I use my holidays from work to go up and help a week at a time because he NEEDS the help!

you are wrong on all counts there im afraid,

and what counts would they be? The only thing I stated was that I assume you'd of asked somebody for permission at some point? Ok I might be wrong and you just poach or don't even hunt! And the rest were questions for you, so I don't see how I could be wrong in a question? Please... Elaborate?

Oops just re-read my post I also stated that you clearly have never done a days farm work. If I'm wrong about that then what were you doing that day that gave you the impression that farmers sit around doing nowt all day? Were you sitting around doing nowt?

f**k farmers, maybe if you'd stuck in at school instead of relying on your farming way of life coz it's 'tradition', then you could go and get a job that pays..... no sympathy for them, in the real word if something doesn't pay you cut your loses and move onto something else, I'm sure my defendants made bows and arrows but I'm not trying to earn a living by doing so..... to make money you need to diversify, or just rent me a shed with electric and ignore the smell ;)
