I got p1ssed off keep trying to trim mine back with a stanley blade, and then when I got a couple of whitlows I went to the GP. He referred me to a chiropodist but she couldn't sort them with her scalpel and organised the removal. It only took about 20-30 minutes to do both, and you get to watch. After removal they apply some liquid which kills the nail roots. After about a fortnight there is no discomfort at all, and been OK since. Only bit about it which was painful was when they administered the local anaesthetic with a 2" canula from the tip of the toe down to about the 1st knuckle.
