Northern Rock 512
I have only been back in the game a few months after life kept me away from it for 12-13 years. Currently have my terrier pup and was thinking of running a long dog alongside her and getting them both going for next season. So, joined a few groups, looked around for pups and seems like there are so many dogs up for sale between 7 months and 15 months. Now, I only ran dogs for 10-12 years or so but the ones I had, by that age were just about stopping being babies, certainly by 15 months they were only just getting a look at anything other than rabbits ( it was all legal then ) . Seems to be a bunch of messers, buying a terrier or a bull X lurcher and giving up before the dog has even started. Is this a recent thing or been going on a few years ??? Quote Link to post
king 11,977
Do you mean people only having dogs for 15 months and giving up on them ?? Quote Link to post

planete 120
It is not just terriers and lurchers. Look on some rescue websites. People take on a cute pup then the minute it starts needing real time and effort to turn it into a well-behaved dog they get rid. Nothing new but perhaps more widespread then before. Carraghs Gem 1,675
see it in the working shepherds as well... some donkey buys one as a pet and by time its 10mths old its bitten the owner and they are afraid of the dog Quote Link to post

JB68 , a few years ago it was bulls and pits that were the 'trophy' dog, it now seems lamping with bullx and daytime with saluki's is the current thing, every one who wants to be an idiot with a dog is swapping and selling them, not on about the genuine working lads and lasses who treat them right but that they are the new fad as such . Never seen so many dogs up for sale that really, haven't even shown what they are capable of. 1 Quote Link to post

Too many idiots in the game get a dog run it a couple of times then realize all the work you have to put in all year round or they start a pup and the novelty wears off. I find most of this happens with bulls alot of these lads just point and run dog with no or little training or the daytime saluki lurchers with big legendary names, out of blah blah 5 out of 5 etc...bullshit....thats why they buy and swap all year round. 2 Quote Link to post
low plains drifter 10,649
When you've got bored lads getting dogs for "something to do", is it any wonder the novelty soon wears off, not a big hunter myself, but i'm out in the fields pretty much everyday, and after more than twenty years, i'm yet to feel any hint of boredom or disinterest 1 Quote Link to post
