neems 2,406
Any newbies reading this , ignore the 8month old posts ffs..yea ignore it mate.it can't be done.it can be done, but as always it's luck of the draw whether you end up not damaging the dog.Do you really think for a newbie to come on here, first dog, inexperienced, that starting a dog at 8 months old on the lamp is sound advice? Give me a f***ing break lol My lurcher wouldn't of even caught at 8 months. But by 12 months I took him out, first ever rabbit he saw, run nice, picked it up and retrieves it live to hand and Iv taken it steady from there. what's the luck of the draw ? A dog can damage itself at any ageSome dogs will catch at 8 months.and if a newbie had a dog that he took lamping and give it a few slips and his dog caught is that a bad thing.no dog will learn anything in a kennel or crate.as you say your dog wouldn't catch at 8 months old how can you be so certain.if your pup was brought up by a different handler then maybe it would catch at 8 months He doesn't have to be sat in a kennel though does he? I'd just get him out playing with other dogs I know, fetching tennis balls and learning to negotiate cover/woodland and a bit of obedience. Quote Link to post

blackmaggie 3,376
Total difference in taking a pup out, stock breaking and so on and ferreting when most holes are net up. But LAMPING is full of hazardous stuff. ANY dog can get injured but mature fit dogs can stop quicker and take a knock better ... You can on as you will, but like jeemes have quite right pointed out, most dogs are sickened by two, and they don't sicken themselves... were did i say i had sickened a pup any run can be hazardous ferreted or lamped what happens if a hole is not netted does a pup run it or not and if you spy a squatter far out do you slip your youngster all decisions that you make could make or break the dog and i dont know if you know yet matey but a pup thats been out educating it self ferreting etc is one you can tell has had time spent with it up against one thats been wrapped in cotton wool Quote Link to post
cooper101 86
I always start with the basics sit ,stay and heel, when they master that I teach the retrieve, I don't care if the pups 6months or a year if it doesn't have the basics I won't take near quarry....and the final thing I do before I start ferreting with my pup is stock break it...ferrets, sheep, chickens, etc....now I've had some pups not grasp this till nearly 8months I've had one do it all before 5months...that one was ferreting at 6months and when I was happy with him retrieving too me and steady enough I took him lamping at 8months all picked runs nothing that would dishearten him....I believe in making my pups life as easy as possible so his confidence is through the roof...but that was the earliest I've been able too get one of my dogs ready for lamping....others I haven't had lamping until there over a year old....I don't rush my pups I stick too a set of basic steps that if the pup doesn't learn too my satisfaction I won't move on too the next step....so I can't put an age on when a pup should be run on the lamp because all dogs are diffrent and chasing a rabbit and catching it isn't somthing u need too teach it..that's natural....the training is the manners and retrieving....all the best billy 2 Quote Link to post
