Somewhereyournot 1,117
They'll learn feck all in the kennel that's it Jim, get them out as soon as there jabbed up , my younger dog was out at 9 weeks old, he knew what stock were, fences ,ditches etc he deff learned all his field craft. And as seen rabbits from young age when he did start run couple at 6 months old it was no big deal for him, ive never looked back with him , ive had good bags as ive said on my thread, and he take any quarry that he put on, he very calm dog when not working, but full on when does work, get them out when pups you wont hurt them , you not pushing them, pups will play all day long its just extension of that did he not have a shoulder injury? correct, hence my reply Quote Link to post
blackmaggie 3,376
I think pups are a bit more durable than you give credit for matey mine out after jabs learning stock control and socialize with other dogs and let them learn field craft and how to work things out for themselves in different situations its all about education you cant wrap them in cotton wool for ever then out with the ferrets at about six months has whin said you can teach them plenty In a controlled manner then lamping you point to injuries but don't they face them every day or night all there lives 1 Quote Link to post
jeemes 4,485
The facts are there whether you want to see them or not. I think what you talking about is a dog learning to use itself which is fine and how it should be,but that is different to full power chasing. Pups are fine to go out and learn but when they reach an age where there muscles are strong but the skeleton hasnt finished developing then damage which is sometimes serious can occur. If you want to start using something before the glue is fully set then carry on,but what does your brain tell you about that? A lot of times when lads think there dog isnt trying or not what it used to be is because the dog could be carrying an injury that niggles him like a tooth ache. He wont tell you unless you really know what to look for,so in a lot of cases the dog is passed on or put down. Impatience is the biggest ruin of most pups. Im not saying wrap them in cotton wool, just the opposite in fact but just learn how to handle an animal until it is properly finished. Its called husbandry. 1 Quote Link to post
Somewhereyournot 1,117
Total difference in taking a pup out, stock breaking and so on and ferreting when most holes are net up. But LAMPING is full of hazardous stuff. ANY dog can get injured but mature fit dogs can stop quicker and take a knock better ... You can on as you will, but like jeemes have quite right pointed out, most dogs are sickened by two, and they don't sicken themselves... Quote Link to post

mhopton 807
Learning a dog when it's a puppy is 99.9% easer than at say 13 months simply because whenever they want to go after a rabbit it will and just keep going until it's done all the fields before you walk half way across one Quote Link to post
Landrace 9
Personally I would start them about 10 to 11 months and it would be those big mountin rabbits if you know what I mean! As I find they have no where to escape too. Reduces the chance of a young dog pulling up. Quote Link to post

I tried a year with him after , but the shoulder kept playing him up , as you know its a tough old life for a working terrier or running dog, but they love working as much as we do, and if they carnt run proper its not fair on them to be just stuck in a kennel 24/7 .! 1 Quote Link to post
