Allan P 1,150
What are people's preference. I have a rough coated at the minute and would never have one again complete nightmare. Everything sticks to it especially when he backs half way up a tree when taking a dump. Also everyone thinks he's a fat bast@£d. Def smooth coated for my next dog. Quote Link to post

Allan P 1,150
Is it quite a harsh coat on your dogs the one shake and they are dry type northernlite? Mine is soft and to be honest a nightmare. Quote Link to post
zx12edge 1,001
Had both but like rough or broken coated dogs 1 Quote Link to post
Wild-Bill 500
I prefer the look of a smooth dog. Can see its shape properly, know it's muscled up, on a rough harder to tell. Although the rough coat can hide a multitude of sins... If i has choice I would proberly pick smooth. But I ain't to fussed Edited December 6, 2015 by Wild-Bill 2 Quote Link to post
Omanyra 2,518
I must admit I love the look of some rough coated lurchers, deerhound crosses and Beddy crosses, but, the two best dogs Ive owned were smooth coated 1 Quote Link to post
Chid 6,537
I prefer smooth but I've got rough coated ones now Quote Link to post
shaaark 10,789
Rough coated dogs are scruffy and smelly lol, although it must be said, on occasion smooth coated dogs can also be smelly . Seriously though, the worst coats I've personally seen, poor, thin, not cold or water resisant, have been bedlington x's. I know some people will obviously say different, NL , but I'm saying personally. My lad's rough coated dog, with beardie in, has probably the most water and weather resistant coat I've seen on a dog, and will happily spend a couple of hours in wind and rain gnawing at a bone, when he only has to get up and move three or four yards to be inside! 1 Quote Link to post

Somewhereyournot 1,117
All dogs kennelled and walked in mucky damp field will smell. Condition is easier to see on smooth coat. I do think if you got a thick, ad I mean proper thick dense coat that it adds a little protection. Although the thicker the coat the quicker they over heat. It's nice knowing my dog won't be as cold as a dog that has a proper smooth coat when kennelled up. Quote Link to post
TAXI DRIVER 549
Smooth is easier to keep clean and find ticks early. Quote Link to post
Somewhereyournot 1,117
Smooth is easier to keep clean and find ticks early.not if you run your hands over the dog daily. I give my dog a rub down every day, especially before lamping and check feet before and after lamping. I also brush him out once a week along with nail clipping routinely. So just depends what your like I suppose. Just to add, my rough dog does smell, but Iv had smooth coat dogs smell near enough as much, one oatterdale I had absolutely stunk and I do give them wash down time to time.
