AKA-BRINDLE 879
What needs to be remembered is Calzaghe fought Hopkins and Jones jnr at the end his career...when Joe was past his best...when he was in his prime Warren made major efforts to get the Hopkins fight on...but Hopkins was unreasonable and didnt want to know...if you read the boxing papers from back then its all in there...the match couldnt be made...and when Joe was in his prime Jones jnr was more interested in fighting at Light Heavy...thats not Calzaghe's fault...the only fault with Calzaghe's career in hindsight was that he should of fought over in the states a bit more...but he was the Champion...so his choice Roy Jones jnr is fighting Enzo Maccarinelli in Moscow on the 12th...hes a russian citizen these day dont know whats thats all about? gnasher16 30,121
The achilles heel for Nigel was always trainers he could never settle on one trainer and kept swapping them i remember as an amateur the 2 fights he had with Rod Douglas were unbelievable fights as amateurs go Vic Andretti had him then and was a good trainer then when he turned pro he went with Brian Lynch who was a joke really....his words of wisdom before a fight would be " just go and smash him up Nige "....then Kevin Sanders was better but still limited.......Dennie Mancini was good and De Freitas was just his mate Nigel still says today if he had spent his career with Jimmy Tibbs theres no telling what he would of achieved at world level,he never lost a fight with Jimmy.....i still say to this day Nigel Benn was the most naturally talented fighting man ive ever seen.
gnasher16 30,121
As a boxing fan ive probably always been a bit too critical of Calzaghe saying he was just a fitness freak who could box a bit......he was a very good boxer but like you lads i dont think he can ever sensibly be compared to the likes of Roy Jones there records are almost comical in comparison its like comparing Marcianos record with Muhammed Ali,s !......its the reason all fighters should be encouraged to fight at their highest level during their peak or it leaves too many questions on what should be a competition of proving truth.
WILF 47,044
Something about Nigel Benn that you had to respect, the bloke had/has a prescience about him. Funny, my girls were watching Eubank on the telly the other night and they were all a bit like "who is this wally dad" and yes it's easy to see him like that......but I explained to them that the wally once fought a man called Nigel Benn and those two men in that ring were an awesome thing to behold. Nigel is born again if I'm not mistaken and Chris is just Chris but you can't take away what those blokes once were IMHO

TUFFTY 1,476
To me Nigel has always been Nigel (himself) although he seems a little more calmer than 20 years ago. Eubank is a bit like Mcflurry. A fcukin idiot.
WILF 47,044
Gnasher I like reading your take on things mate, it's nice when you read a bloke who knows what he is talking about. To me, Benn always had the look of a bloke that you would have to kill him to stop him getting up again.....he went to another place when he fought, that's how I viewed him myself anyway. TUFFTY 1,476
The first Benn v Eubank fight I was there. Nigels face. Watch the fight again and you watch and feel the hatred he had for Eubank Just the look would have grown men filling there pants. The awe.

Thing his Nigel didn't have the greatest set of whiskers out there, he had the heart of a lion though and had devastating power. From what I've read Benn was an animal in training, guess that comes from the military background and Eubank was a bit lazy. Chris is naturally the bigger, stronger guy and was a hard son of a bitch. DogFox123 1,379
collins must have caught them at the right time,or was he just rougher a fighter. Not only that he was a huge Super Middleweight and very physically strong, he also had a good pedigree being trained over the pond. He gave the great Mike McCallum a good test in 1990.
