The bitch I’ve got has a bad mouth but is a very good fox dog. i wouldn’t put her into any ‘ breeding program ‘ though as you’d probably have it , or the chance of it forever. yis T Quote Link to post
Aussie Whip 4,133
Isn't too much close breeding the cause of an undershot mouth in dogs?I know you have to keep it close to cement lines and traits but if one part is not right what about the rest, organs etc.I know dogs with entropion usually have multiple unseen health issues. I have limited access to good terriers in my area so when I seen something I liked I just inbred from that point forward.Thats when I first seen extremely undershot terriers.Another generation of inbreeding and they were 50% undershot now its seemed to level out at 50-60%.Thats also when mine started throwing bat ears.I believe these are recessive traits that shine through inbreeding.2 reasons I inbred to this point 1-limited access to good terriers 2-small weedy terriers are needed for digging in Dixie. My hardest terrier is 13lbs bitch and an inch undershot but she can fit to an otter with ease. In Dixie very few if any seriously dig so I'm not afforded the luxury of selecting for ears or straight mouth.I hope to own a good-looking terrier some day. This is my 2 cents worth. I'm Sorry stuck at home bored and rambling. 1 Quote Link to post

Rickshaw swami 4,139
I think it does affect health.I have some bitches who are 8 and never came in heat.Smaller litter size.I also get one in every litter that is large and robust the picture of health.I have not seen any major health deffects but if you can't reproduce it limits what you can do for sure.I have bred my male to some half cousins hoping to be able to continue. When inbreeding heat cycles change first in my opinion from seeing it in a few breeds. 2 Quote Link to post
EDDIE B 3,166
This dog was badly undershot as a pup. Improved somewhat as he matured Quote Link to post
dillydog 8,463
If you are line breeding or inbreeding you're doubling up on the fault and setting it, the only way you'll improve your chances is new blood without the fault. 5 Quote Link to post
culltheweak 1,026
Dogs must carry the mouth fault gene so it’s not always easy Not to breed dogs with it only fault I can see is if the dog can’t eat then it’s a problem lol 1 Quote Link to post
