beam 130
Well I've been a chef since the age of 16 and now 22 I'm looking at a career change. I've always enjoyed landscaping and outdoor work, I have a few choices in mind that would see me back in college for a few years. I've been toying with the idea of a tree surgeon but haven't got a clue where to start? I'd be looking to do more on sight training eg (apprenticeship) rather than being out a pocket for the courses, because quite frankly I couldn't afford it! Lol Cheers in advance Yis, beam. bob.243 8,742
Best of luck Beam, it can be done, my son served his time as a joiner, after a few years he got pissed off, gave it up and went to Uni. and took a degree in mechanical engineering, he is now a project engineer in the oil & gas industry.
dogmad riley 1,343
Often thought about it myself I am an electrical engineer at the min but was landscape gardener before and I enjoyed that more but the money is good as a engineer
moxy 617
Climbing is hard yakker but satisfying and enjoyable. I would suggest doing the basic course. Cs 30 & cs 31 ( chainsaw maintenance cross cutting and the felling of small trees ). That would make you more attractive to a firm who hopefully will stick you in at the deep end and teach you a thing or two. Maybe then look into getting into climbing and they buy the gear and pay for your courses. If your looking to get straight in with a firm. Apply to fountains or a utility company which has a tree outfit. Or one of the larger local tree surgery companies. Ok you will only be dragging brash to start with but you have to start somewhere. http://www.fountainsforestry.co.uk/careers

offtheradar 175
I started my own gardening business 18 months ago when I got sick of working 70 hour weeks in a factory and missing my kids growing up. I can't say that the money is the best at the moment but things are improving all the time. If you were to go down the gardening route I wouldn't start with trees as there are so many others with established businesses to compete against. I'd start out getting contracts with nursing homes and children's nurseries as well as private regular customers. Whatever you decide to do good luck your doing it at the right age I think, I'm 38 now and wish I had the bollocks to do this year's ago

Daniel cain 45,276
I made a few mistakes in my teens and ended up in a Yoi s for 18 months.when i got out i got to do a course on countryside managment, fencing, drystone walling etc, done every sort of landscaping and tree surgery, had a nice number as a greenkeeper/pest controller on pga golf course back in 2000.Then started my own company with a mate, started contract work around business parks etc money's ok as long as the weather's on your side.I got into shopfitting and joinery best money I've earnt other than working as a telecoms engineer for BT, I got out when the money went dwn.I know work on site/road as groundworker/machine driver money's ok half what I earned as shopfitters or engineer but I stuarted a family and was sick of working away. It's not always about the money IMHO, I get buy just fine and my kids/wife want for nothing but I'm not happy as I am, so invested in a pest control manual to get my level 2 bpca and start work as a pest controller, got the 1200 saved to sit the exams and hopefully get up to Stirling in the new year and get that under my belt.People I've spoken to in the industry say it's shit no money but I don't care, won't know until I give it a go.I would say to anyone if you want a change don't be scared get and do it,only you can change yor life, wouldn't ever want to look back at my life and think what if?You can do it!!!atb dc ☺ Edited November 29, 2015 by Daniel cain
