tomburras 2,730
well last weekend i fancied a wander to my old childhood haunts with the dogs and a friend, top on my list was to visit an old large mill buildings bomb shelter. i knew the mill had been knocked down and a housing estate was now on there but looking at google maps I knew the old bomb shelter was away from the new houses. armed with my torch and after a long winded introduction to my friend when we got there it had been removed I dont know why it was removed it is not even near the new houses but its a pice of british history to me anyway. As a child I remember the day I found it - i felt like the excitement of an Egyptian pyramid explorer! (even tho it was probably well known lol) i just been looking into old war bomb shelters and found this story http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2104808/Somerset-couple-Les-Sheila-Holmes-discover-WW2-air-raid-shelter-garden.html nice discovery! anyone on here discovered or know any ww2 bomb shelters on here? I find them fascinating! an would love to hear ones you know of.

tomburras 2,730
on one of my north yorkshire perms theres a concrete structure with 2 rooms. one was the engine room with dynamo - the other held a fold out light signalling the way to the nearby runway for returning planes. tomburras 2,730
Found it..... It was not full of tyres and water when I used to visit it. I dunno why they removed it, it's a shame!

Blackdog92 2,047
Is it underground? Ye it was theres only a hole about 20 25 inchs wide to crawl in so once i made it a bit more air tight it was snug until the wind changed direction and nearly smoked us out lol.
