THE GENERAL 1,982
A well respected terriermen I know had a bitch that ended up in his yard, she was well bred. long story short, The bitch was deaf. A real good bitch. Died of cancer a year or so later. There's a difference between a terrier being switched on and ignoring your demands while it does its job and not being able to hear threw deafness. The one that is busy and can hear, but ignores you, would be safer off deaf, its not going to listen while it's onto a scent. Couldn't fault that bitch, couldn't call her out haha Edited November 29, 2015 by THE GENERAL 1 Quote Link to post
Hands of Stone 154
I have a young deaf Russell which I am hoping to enter end of this season. I do reckon being deaf makes him quite jumpy, as he quite of jumps out of his skin if I sneak up on him and put my hand on him, that said if/when he goes down a tube stinking of fox he should be expecting trouble! 1 Quote Link to post

It might work well and if it does it doesnt need to be bred from. 4 Quote Link to post

MOLE265 792
A dog should have all it's senses if one is missing then in my opinion it's at a serious disadvantage especially with such a dangerous foe as a fox. I was at a gamefair quite a number of years ago with a black fell type terrier a grand little worker there was two guys there I knew one of them had a white lakeland type very smart looking dog we got talking about how my wee dog worked and I asked him about his dog his answer was och he's hard as nails but he's mute and then comes the punch line he comes out with do you want to swap dogs I just started laughing and said no he'll be going home with me lol. we met up later on and the guy tells me the white lakey type was lost to ground. Although it is a disadvantage, if the dog was a goodun im sure it would adapt its nose to suit. Culling is great when you have a few pups/litters available in the near future, but if this is your only pup available, id take a shot as long as your not planning to breed from it. Don't sneak up on him then, if someone creeps up behind you and grabs your shoulders you jump a mile as well. 1 Quote Link to post

I definitely wont be breeding from it but if it wants to work ill work it and see how it goes. I wasn't even looking to get another terrier until I got a text asking if I knew of anyone who wanted a terrier for free and if it couldn't find a home it was going to be pts I'm a big believer in giving a dog a chance and I don't think a dog should be pts just for being deaf atb SR 2 Quote Link to post
hjckcff 1,738
good luck with the pup and do keep us informed as to its progress. as it isnt part of a breeding programe i dont think its a cull. although if it was part of a breeding program it most definately would be. i hope it becomes of some use to you. i think some sort of recall will be essential to you forming a partnership.
