terrier locators

Recommended Posts

Just been having a look at possible alternatives which could be used in place of Bellman & Flint

terrier locators, does anyone have any experience of using one for terrier work? The reason is ,i have seen some Avalanche transcievers which use the same technology(DSP) that also use an analog

search for a longer range or weak signals and can give audio tracking as well as digital. One such

device called the Barryvox Mammut Pulse Avalanche transciever can do all this and i have seen several on Ebay usually in the states going for about £180,this is a considerable saving for the same or better technology,but i have a few questions about the sets;

1.Is the transmitter unit very similar to the Bellman terrier collar transmitter?

2.IF i buy a Bellman terrier collar, will it be picked up by the Barrvox?(i understand for compatiblity worldwide, the tx units usually tx on 435 MH).

3.Same as Q2,can the Barryvox tx be recieved by the Bellman?

4. The Barryvox can detect mulpile signals, can the Bellman do this?

5.Is there any advantage with Bellman that other units cannot perform?

I know it's a few questions but i'm just trying to find out as much info as i can before i buy either

the bellman or any other kit,but reading through the specs on both units the Barryvox definitely

is better, but i suppose everyone will still stick to them maybe for after sales service /support

or because they are well accepted as the default locator kit for terriers now, remember i'm only asking

these questions to satisfy my own curiosity and perhaps make some savings, thanks in advance,

Higgins.

i ve got DSP PIES which is BF box, and also Mammut baryvox, i use Ortovox collar- smaller than BF, and y can buy it for 90eur with out the box, BF wont sell y the collar. Y must buy the whole set.

i test them both boxes and Mammut is better, more accurate in long and very short distances. plus the box is more solid and the displey is full graphic.

Me too GJ, i have a gut feeling the kits can be transferable, seen the pieps on Ebay too as avalanche

transcievers,so if the transmitters are operating on the same frequencies then they will work together,

i believe the frequency has to be very clear of interference because the lives of people could possibly be at stake in a snow burial situation, also the transmitters nust be compatible with most recievers whether it's Pieps

or Ortovox and any others, so the the reliability and accurracy is paramount, these kits represent the best locating devices currently available, but IMO the Barryvox seems the ideal piece of kit,

Thanks for that pic ,Matulkoh, can you tell us what the transmitter on the collar is,what manufacturer,

also do you know if the Bellman collars can work with the Barryvbox or the other way round also?

Higgins.

PS;In my previous posts i mentioned the frequency,i believe i quoted the wrong frequency, i think it's 457 kh,is this correct?Have you field tested both products and can you report on

performances of either?Thanks again.

i bought it in austria, go on orthovox page and y ll find it, i tested them both, mammut is better, transmitter is ortovox- i put it on collar on my own, make a small plastic protection. all transmitters, boxes work on the same frequency 457 so they will work together, but first of all BF wont sell y just the collar, i spoke with them several times, i also asked them if their collar d work with mammut, they confirmed it, but they spoke about some special software in their box/ wich is Pieps DSP/ just think what is more important, dogs or humans? so can be dogs locators better than those for us?

i got mammut barryovox OPTO 3000 , Pieps DSP, and the BARRYOVOX Pulse which is the best, but it depands on money, if y have a chance to buy pieps for good money, or opto 3000, go and buy it, Pulse is quite expensive but the best, i bought 2 because i ride a lot in back country so it s for my protection.

but all these are far cheaper than BF.

thanks for that Matulkoh,i think that answers most of my questions enough to splash out and experiment

on mixed setups, but the software B&f mention, what would that be for and would it make any difference

without it?Also do you know if there are different versions of PIEPS boxes as i have seen pieps and

also 'smart advanced' pieps is that an upgraded transciever?

PIEPS DSP is top product from the company, Mammut Barryvox PULSE is better, I do not believe that BF have some special softver, as i mentioned y cant have a better set for dogs like for humans, y never know how deep the snow is, if there is just snow, trees, mud stones, antenas which work on same frequency nothing more nothing less, i dig with all of them, each one is more than suitable for digging, but Pulse is best. y can save money and get even better set.
