Dog Biting

Right lads I have kept lurchers for years and had few pups in my time ,I have a pup that's 5 months old granted she is teething at moment and does chew which is to be expected . I must admit that she has been easy to train walk great on lead never barks comes to recall etc .but I am starting to get worried as she will lick ur hand one minunte then try to bite and even when told off she will try again to bite now as there is young kids on the go I am very worried with this and never had any probs we any other of my lurchers . Hope for some advise as if this continues I will be putting it to sleep . Hoping some tells me she will grow out of it as family love her to bits .

What kind of biting is it aggressive biting in anger or fear ?? Or playING biting??

If it's not aggression I wouldn't worry about it, dogs do everything with their mouths , and if you had to ask I can bet it isn't aggression because you won't need to ask it lol

I have never had a lurcher that would just snap at hands fingers ,and yeah iam worried as kids about all the time although supervised all the time with dog . Dog gets loads of exercise every day had few pups ,and to be fair none have ever been as bad as this one for bitting at this age. just hoping it grows out it soon as ,but all my

lurchers have been great with kids and very loving with them untill this one ,i am begin to distrust it around kids .

Let out a loud yelp and turn away from the pup ignoring it for a few minutes whenever it mouths your hand, it plays on their natural instincts because that's how their dam and littermates would teach it when it was getting too rough.

 

Really wouldn't worry too much about it at this stage, a lot of pups go through this stage.

My 8 month old dog here Rex started doing it at about 12weeks giving a little nip here and there to my young lad.

And the 13 week old pup here is in the same stage now nipping a few of us in the house.

The dog is play fighting with you my dogs all play fight together. They don't know right from wrong and they learn everyday.a tap on the nose and a firm no is all it takes I've found.rex is way past that stage now.

I've had staff pups in the past about 12yrs ago and they love giving a nip to a hand foot clothing etc. They know no different until YOU the owner disciplines them.

But if the tap on the nose has no effect place your hand around there muzzle and give it a light squeeze until the dog makes a little cry. Now that will cure it I'm pretty certain.

My be your kids are teasing your pup , had same with my pup biting feet and it was down to my kids teasing pup with there feet

Obviously Scottish Lurcher you know the diffrence between puppy mouthing and being bitten because you s tated clearly you have had plenty of dogs/ pups before.If it was me I would put the dog down if I thought the dog had a tendency to bite people. Zero tolerance for me. You can be the patent type or stop the dog doing it somehow but the fact remains the dog can revert to that behavior later in life.

I wouldnt question it if it was mine but then its only you who knows what is happening,but if its enough to cause you concern and fear now you could regret it later and its just not worth it especially where children are involved. Most of the replies here are misunderstanding puppy biting for aggression,but I would grant you more intelligence than that SL.

It's 5 months old Jeemes and teething.and you want have zero tolerance and pts.

Don't get me wrong I would put an older dog down if I thought it was kid. people.aggressive but at 5 months old ? Obviously I can't see the way the dog is behaving because I'm not there.but if there's was a good hint of aggression being shown by the dog I would come down really hard and put the dog In its place.

The pup could be trying to climb the pack order trying to be alpha but it's got to be shown its place in the pack.

There is a world of difference between an aggressive biting dog and a dog that's mouthing your hands ... An aggressive dog when biting will have its ears back hackles up tail held low and will most times will have a low growl as its committing the act ... A dog who's just mouthing will be excited showing no aggressive signals ... Also if a 5 month old dog was biting aggressively you would definitely know all about it ... One of my dogs here does it and smiles ... Now if you didn't know dogs you would think this dog is snarling at you but in fact it's a happy excited smiling face ... The rest of the dogs body language tells you it's harmless ... But if you don't know dogs you wouldn't know .......

I had a lurcher bitch before who while trotting past you would give you a tiny nip on the hand.she would do it numerous times on a day out.i just put it down to the dog being happy enjoying the day's events.
