socks 32,253
We have this debate every year without fail ... My dogs have got a two foot deep bed filled with wax paper and a heat lamp above them ... Years ago there was no such thing as heat lamps so the dogs didn't have them ... But we have heat lamps now so my dogs get them ... They work hard for me day in day out so I will give them the best I can ... We all hunted in the pouring rain before good waterproofs were invented but as sure as shit we all wear the best waterproofs we can afford now ... Times change things progress so you progress with them ........ 17 Quote Link to post

brenner 773
I'm thinking I might run a large electric heating pad used for reptile tanks in the bottom of the whippets box this week . Fairly cheap to buy and I would say ,cheaper to run then a lamp. Quote Link to post

Fairly cheap to buy and I would say ,cheaper to run then a lamp. A heat mat wouldn't make much of a difference pal I've tried it for my whippet cross and after I put her blanket over the mat I couldn't really feel the heat so just got her a good coat and job done Quote Link to post

paulsmithy83 567
I dont use them as i think my kennel well insulated many a time after lamping instead of waking the house i slept in the storage part of my kennel in freezing winter and been warm had good night kip. Which tells me it warm enough in there with good deep bedding and a smaller space to heat in there boxes 2 Quote Link to post
dodger 2,754
Two dogs thrown in together and half a square bale of straw with them.plenty heat me thinks.Aye reckon some insulation n good clean fresh straw remains king aswell n as you say even better with a companion for them to snuggle up to.. Iv got heating in my kennels it comes with them as standard but Iv never felt the need to turn them on as the kennels are made out of strong PVC n seem to keep warm enough without the heating plus there in the house a lot aswell but wouldn't hesitate using the heating if it was a cold one and they were outside more regular surprising how much energy n cals and condition a dog will use if it's not housed right.. 1 Quote Link to post

jeemes 4,480
I made my dog beds 10inch off the floor and big enough for the dog to stretch out. Plenty of bedding and heat lamp above when its cold like now.I give my dogs the best grub cooked every day,it would be pointless to have all that used up making heat because the dog is cold and wet.Why some folk think they sound tough by admitting they dont know how to keep dogs right whilst they themselves lay in warm beds with duvets and pillows I will never understand. 4 Quote Link to post
scottish lurcher 185
Common sense Dogs need to be kept warm so they are properly rested and will be able to work better ,no need in this day and ages to keep dogs in cold poor conditions , although mines are now kept in doors due to dog thefts . I have kept dog outdoor in kennels and have always kept them warm and dry , I like heat lamps helps keep them warm and drys them off ,also seems to helps heal and sprains and strains they have . Theres no right way or wrong way as long the dog is comfortable, warm and dry. Out of interest to who use a heat lamp what height is your lamp and have you tested it yourself do you use a heat regulator or thermostat that turns on and off the lamp to keep the kennel to the ideal temperature range. A hot kennel is just as bad as a cold kennel ??? 1 Quote Link to post
