Which is why i added proven .Proven to me is not only work but throwing his like too.

a bit of a contradiction because at the first mating he hasnt proved he passes on his like so someone has to use the dog on its work only.

The thread is about repeat matings Sherlock.By the second mating the first litter would be working .To use a stud exclusively over many bitches is my choice and certainly sets the seed for work .Confidence is whats needed as is the choice of a good strong dog .Once proven to throw his like ,the temptation is to work him less often so as to reduce the inevitable .

Fd,let's say the chosen stud dog dies of old age or when working. Would you chose a dog from him then to continue the line? Ideally how many seasons work would he have done and what bitches would you put him back to. How closely related would they be? Interesting thread.

A replacement stud or two are always about and i use them before the main is gone to reafirm hes bred right .However he would be at least 5 year old before taking the roll on .Hs would be a direct son of main stud .

I did, but homozygous dogs that replicate themselves both type and work wise aren't too common unless tightly bred. I've seen guys do it to the detriment of stock too.

The only dog i will put over any terrier i own and not to closely related to him,most are, is my Beddy dog,he was a proven worker and anything he as thrown have been proven workers,bushing and FOX working terriers above and below,ive let one go as he was becoming a digging terrier,the others are as honest as baying,bolting bushers should be.They will not suit some,yet as the olde proverb states "horses for courses".His son,a Beddy/Fell combo will be the dog that goes over his Beddy siblings,another proven grafter,he should throw the same,or ill source a better option.

Sounds like good breeding methods ye have in keeping a line going. Any harm in asking do ye breed many pups in a yr and what percentage of them litters would end up being good workers?
