cúagusgiorraí 57
I was told by a vet that no human painkiller is suitable for a dog. I used to give aspirin but that causes problems in the long term as well. Quote Link to post

mad al 146
One thing is for sure, all suitable drugs returned to chemists are heading in the general direction of your local Vets anyway, after they've been played with, re-packed and the amount you have to pay for the pleasure is increased about a billion times Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
It is far far better to get a veterinary pain killer for dogs: not worth risking their lives by using human medecine. Whilst some medecines such as antibiotics cross the species barrier, pain killers are not one of them. If you have a decent relationship with your vet who understands working dogs you should be able to get Rimadyl which is an anti inflammatory/pain killer, but like all these drugs it should not be used long term. Even Metacam can cause liver function problems if used long term, though Metacam is commonly prescribed for long term use for conditions such as arthritis in dogs. The effect is cumulative which is why it is not as good as Rimadyl for immediate effect. There is also a risk involved by giving an injured dog a pain killer inasmuch that the dog will then not feel pain and risk damaging itself even further when it runs about. If a dog is in very severe pain then it should see the vet anyway. You say the bitch has damaged her shoulder: exactly what is the damage? The only cure for a torn muscle, torn ligaments/tendons, bruising etc is rest, massage, electro magnetic therapy (Porta Mag) and more rest. If you don't know exactly what damage has been sustained then dishing out pain killers might be the very last thing you should do. Its very difficult for anyone trying to give advice over a forum as no one knows the level of experience the injured dog's owner has in these things. Nor have we actually seen the dog with our own eyes. A very experienced dog man/woman will be able to tell what damage has occurred, but if the owner is not so experienced then all the advice in the world won't help if the dog has a broken bone, for example. Broken bones are not always that easy to diagnose unless x-rayed. A hair line fracture or non displaced break will cause the same symptoms of pain to the touch, lameness etc as bad bruising or a torn muscle etc. It can be very dangerous trying to give advice like this on the net, so if in doubt see the vet.
