Maximus Ferret 2,063
I had a dog pup from Mick back in the early 80's I think or could have been late 70's. I was living in Lincs. at the time and didn't have a car, so thumbed it to Great Yarmouth and got a train to Berney arms, as instructed by letter from Mick. When the train pulled off I was stood on an empty platform in the middle of a steaming nowhere. If you've been there you'll know what I'm talking about. I had directions in the letter but still got lost and spent a couple of hours walking over planks and across marsh and past windmills before finally finding the place. I was made welcome for the night and thumbed it back the next day. Mick and Maureen had named my pup Ashley as the sire (I think) was called Ashy and they'd named another of the pups Ashy too. I didn't like the name Ashley so I called mine Ashy too. He grew into a handsome rough coated dog with high prey drive and tremendous stamina but lacked a gear for hare. Good lamp dog though and went on to catch deer once he was moved to a place where he came in contact regularly. This happened when I gave him to a friend Dave, living near Wolsingham (County Durham). Dave had had a pup from a litter I bred from Ashy and "Fruitcake", a quarter collie threequarter grey bitch I bought as a pup from Ron Hedges in Redbourne (Herts.) in the 70's. Dave liked the pup and when she was stolen, wanted me to breed another litter. I lent him the bitch instead and he bred her with Ashy. That started his line which is mentioned here in the thread here :- http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/199378-any-cumbrian-lads-on-here-with-working-lurchers/ I haven't spoken to him for a few years now so don't know if he still breeds them but they were handy daytime mooching dogs and could catch hares. He didn't lamp them. If I get time I'll hunt out old photos of Ashy and see if I can persuade my ancient printer to scan them in. I might even have the letter somewhere. Skycats OH, Andy, had a pup "Moss" from the first litter and bought a bitch pup direct from Mick but I don't think he has that type anymore either. 10 Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
Andy still talks about Mossy from time to time. Very clever bitch. Took a lot of hares through cunning, though not a hare dog as such, and she'd hunt moor hens too, following the bubbles underwater until they came up for air. He bred a couple of litters from her, and her granddaughter got killed before he was able to breed from her: he said she was his best ever lurcher. I never saw Mossy, but that last one was a really traditional type lurcher: sensible, brave enough and a surprising amount of stamina for something with either no or very little Saluki in her. Though I remember Tony Smith saying that Mick had used a Saluki type over one of his bitches at some time. Quote Link to post
Maximus Ferret 2,063
Mossy's mother, Fruitcake, was very good at moorhens too. She could smell them when they were underwater and would feel around with a front paw 'til she pinned them down then stick her whole head underwater to take them from under her "hand". I tried to get Ashy to do this but although he could scent well he never "got" that. He did catch a few moorhens but never that way. Once I spotted one underwater, holding onto grass I think. Stationary anyway. I got him over it but he just didn't seem to get the scent off the water surface. I ate a lot of moorhens back then but they were very common there. Fruitcake took partridges out the air after rain, both French and greys and was also good on pheasant runners, following the blood scent at a gallop and caught ducks and coots too. A keen hare courser, I thought she was top class at the time, busting hedges and striking keenly, but looking back she didn't really have much stamina, being burnt up after one good run or two or three short ones. Ashy had way more stamina, almost like a saluki, but not quite enough speed for the hares there. It was North lincs coursing club area and the hares were top class. Some of the pups from those two (Ashy Fruitcake) litters got the best of both and most seemed to make moochers. Quote Link to post
