Fenland Zander

Recommended Posts

Enjoyed reading this and seeing the photos. I tried catching zander from fen drains around the late 70's/early 80's but all I caught were pike averaging around the 7 - 8lb mark. Did hook something once that fought a bit differently but I lost it without seeing it. I used to wonder if it had been a zander but will never know!

To be honest it's so long ago I can't remember. It was before I could drive and I used to get a lift with a neighbour. Didin't pay all that much attention to where we were going! But for some reason Forty Foot Bank seems to ring a vague bell in the back of my mind, as does Little Ouse. Could either of those be right?

Fluff. One of the best freshwater fish to eat that I personally have ever had. The flakes come off the skeleton with no problem and the taste is amazing. Problem is that fishermen can't seem to come up with the fish. Lots of promises but no Zander. We live in the MIdlands and apparently the fish like very dark areas like canal tunnels etc. Don't know if that's right but I wish I could have a nice 4 pounder to take down the local.

Ate them in canada .shake n bake and fried on the bank.lovely .not atall fishy .was told they only eat pike in the winter as the flesh is firmer

Arent they called walleye in canada jim?I am in ontario next month and getting a day out ice-fishing for them!at least i think they are the intended species.

I caught walleye and pickerel both looked like zander. Was amazing seeing the pack attacking the jelly lures in the crystal clear water.caught them on the red river aswell didnt fancy eating them .winnipeg means muddy waters .it was in flood and very muddy!
