walshie 2,804
I need to order some coal for the burner, but realised i have no idea which coal to get. The previous owner left a quarter of a bunker full of this stuff. It's nice and small so easy to shovel, gives out a good heat and doesn't leave much in the way of cinders, but I've no idea what it is. It seems to be round, but mostly different sizes (all small - the biggest one in the pic is the biggest in the bunker). Any ideas?

WILF 48,469
My advice would be that whatever you buy, make sure it's black !

stealthy1 3,964
Just looks like smokeless coal, made for smokeless areas, burns really well, but can vary a bit on price depending on who you order from, and brands don't seem to matter, it all burns, colelite I think it was called when I was a kid? haymin 2,465
Yep ask your coal man for smokeless coal, up here it's 17.50 a beg ??put a shovel full on the stove before bed and put the ash from the fire on too close it down ?
stealthy1 3,964
Gives you an idea mate. Shop about for a good price per tonne. http://fitzpatrick-fuels.co.uk/coal-and-smokeless-fuel/maxibrite-coalite-premium-smokeless-coal-ovals-20kg-bag.html
walshie 2,804
I used to by coal for my fire at my last place, but that was all huge. I like this because it's nice and small to shovel. Don't even know if it needs to be smokeless here or not.
stealthy1 3,964
If your not in a smoke controlled area, then you can burn tractor tyres if you want. My area is deemed a smokeless zone, so I have to burn seasoned wood, or smokeless fuel. But when it gets dark, it seems to become a free for all.
jocky 198
I burn large anthracite on my multi fuel burner, that what they recommended when they fitted it and in the book that came with it. Got my last tonne from A.W. Parker on ebay. £370 per tonne delivered. and you get a discount on your next order.
Malt 379
Probably anthracite and no, you won't be in a smoke control zone.
Blackbriar 8,569
Lives in Wales, knows nowt about coal.........still enrichng the Welsh culture, mate ? It's unlikely that you're in a 'smokeless' area, living way out there, so just shop around for the best price per tonne...........or start digging !!

air gun ant 1,666
How do you find out if your in a smokeless area? I just ripped the gas fire and got it capped off and smoke bombed the chimney, it was fine so put the back in, packed with vermiculite, did a throat etc hearth and got on with it. 6 years so far and love it probably not the safest way to do it mind lol
