pointer 543
Durham County Council is closing the Durham Light Infantry museum but there is a group trying to save it. Please take a look at the link especially if your from this area and support the group if you feel you share its aims. I'm only keeping up to date through its Facebook page but a web page is due to be active soon. pointer 543
it appears the land its on is worth a lot of money!!!!!! The proposal is to put the collection into storage at Spennymoor. The council says it costs too much and not enough people visit, as has been said it isn't promoted well enough. pointer 543
We are trying to save the collection where it is, if that fails we need to try and make DCC house it somewhere else. If that fails then maybe Auckland or Raby castle could help but who knows. Anything rather than put it into a storage building locked away. Moving the collection isn't ideal as Servicemans ashes have been spread at the site for years and memorial benches put there. DDC want to blame cuts, as always when it doubt blame the Tories!!!!! I feel there's more to the closure than how much money it costs to keep it displayed. The SAVEtheDLI group is trying to raise £5000 to start a legal battle.
ChrisJones 7,975
Definitely warrants preservation but I honestly had never heard of it until this thread. That's public relations (or lack of) for ya! Would the British Legion involve themselves with something like that?
pointer 543
It's a done deal and few people knew anything about it. The groups committee is looking into all options. I doubt The British Legion could get involved in this and it appears without raising money to start a serious legal fight it will definitely close. The SAVEtheDLI group says it needs £5000 to really have a good go at winning. I've gave all I can and the fund is £2000 short with time running out so if anyone is interested in trying to save one of Britain's old regiments museum please donate. A fiver would help, I don't think Durham County Council can be beaten but it's good that some people are trying.

eljay 3
Allegedly the land is to be sold for executive housing, The council is selling our heritage.
pointer 543
Yes the land will go for housing and they will build a nice new County Hall for themselves.
