Hard Mouth On A Dog.

Recommended Posts

Live to hand is a nice touch and for some folk it's essential and i've been fortunate to own very good dogs that do this.ee

Me, i'm far more interested in the catch and as long as the dog don't feck off the other way with it, then that'll do!

On some spots an immaculate live to hand retrieve can cost you a bigger bag. ;)

But it is not just the catch though is it? It's the whole experience the hunt, the catch and the retrieve are all part and parcel of the dogs work.

Ive had nice soft mouthed retrievers, in the past. Now I’ve the worm has turned lol. I enjoy the dog working and the meats a by-product for me these days. To compare to stock worrying is a bit ove

It's nice to see that some people maintaining high standards. Personally I like to have the option to use the rabbit for the table rather than a poorly trained dog who will bruise the catch or even worse not retrieve it to hand. It beggars believe that people are willing to accept anything less than their lurcher retrieving live to hand and it is no wonder why gun dog people regard us lurchermen with such low esteem.

dont know anybody learns their dog to retrieve,if some do it natural fair enough all point n slip merchants here,

As others have said there are much bigger faults a dog could have. If I wrote the top 20 things I want from my lurchers then being soft mouthed on bunnys wouldn't be in there.

Just shows that we all have different expectations.

I've been out with lads who's dogs won't jump. Much bigger problem if you ask me? And something what's easily taught.

Same for crossing water. I've seen "fantastic" dogs sat at the other side of the river whining and crying because it won't come across. But it's okay they had a soft mouths on rabbits. Lol

You get a dog that gets a five minute stinger now & again believe you me your once 100% live to hand retriever is going to disappoint you if you expect it to come trotting back and present you with his catch each & everytime

My wee beddy whippet bitch can be hard mouthed but she doesnt crunch the rabbits. When she gets a bolter or a run she does a quick snap and spits the rabbit out lifeless. Everything else i cant fault her on, she holds well in nets, recalls good and works around livestock no problem. Shes only a ferreting dog. I wish she would retrieve live to hand but i wouldnt get rid of her for killing the odd rabbit.

Actually all my lurchers have all been live to hand. I honestly cannot see the pleasure in owning a point and shoot dog that just kills the rabbits and drops them. To my eyes it reflects badly on the owner that he could not be bothered to teach the dog to retrieve, I mean it's not rocket science after all.

That's just it tiercel.....there's so much more than just the catch, so dead or alive is fairly insignificant to me.........aslong as it comes back in my general direction....haha... Edited by Accip74

Bruising will happen no doubt due to the nature of the hunt but for me I like the idea behind a dog that brings everything back to hand alive in order for it to be humanely dispatched. I know that there are others who don't value this - each to their own I suppose. I apologize if having high standards offends anybody

If your dog only lamps, then your only dealing with one rabbit at a time, so bringing live to hand is a good trick. But when your doing a hedge on your own, and rabbits are bolting, you need a dog that can go up a gear and put them away quickly and move on to the next. Other wise, when the land owner drives past the ground you say you've cleared, and there's rabbits sat out eating his crops, your going to look a twat.
