Training Young Ferrets To Hunt.

Recommended Posts

I have had ferrets for years but only had to train one. I trained a jill kit years ago to go down holes but have forgotten how to do it. I purchased another jill kit in July and the man said not to work her until November. What do you guys do to get them ready to go down the holes? I have handled her for 5 mins almost every day but she is still getting bushy tailed and bitting me. I haven't worn a glove for years with my ferrets as I trust them but I'm not to sure if this one will come out the hole again. I have never used a locator and I do not plan on using one.

Sorry for the vitriol but are you special needs?

5 minutes almost every day is ridiculous, you're refusal to use locators is ridiculous.... Needing a glove is ridiculous... Basically you shouldn't have been sold the ferret, completely ridiculous!

What a fecking vanker completely ridiculous. I have never owned a locator in my life, am I also completely ridiculous? Get off your high fecking horse and drink some milk good boy. Ferreting went on before the advent of locators and will still go on without them. FFS grow up and act your age not your shoe size.

Of course it went on before locators but why risk the ferrets life and health, locators are for the ferrets benefit more than ours. They work hard for us and we should do all we can in return

They are a good tool when used properly of that there is no doubt. But, they are not really a necessity, you can manage quite efficiently without one, well I have for over 50 years. Just because a person chooses not to use one does not mean that he can be abused. Educated yes, but not veritably abused.

There is just no need for it.

I don't reckon you train them you just put them in the mouth of a hole and they do there own thing , but you can sure make it easier for yourself plenty handling when you first get them after they have had a feed helps and running them threw pipes in the garden and getting them used to the noise and picking them up and putting them down again as said its up to yourself if you use a locator but putting a collar on and off them helps or the first time there at a burrow and you put a collar on they can sit inside the hole scratching there neck

I have been told to use a glove. I have had ferrets for years and do not use a glove. I have been sold this ferret by somebody who has been ferreting a lifetime and he told me while it was young to handle it for 5 mins a day. I take my ferrets out to the warrens every week and I have a full day with them. I have never used a locator and have never lost a ferret. I have ferrets that are 10 years old and healthy still hunting. So how dare you call me special needs, I don't know what made you think that you had a right to do so you. I will not be using this forum again if people are on here to abuse and help or show you that you are doing it wrong.

You need to spend a little more time with her mate, seems like your doing it just long enough to be an annoyance for her. Try spending 1/2 an hour to an hour a day for a few weeks, you may need.to put her down for 5 mins to chill out every now and again but she will eventually learn to trust you. try feeding her snippets of meat while holding her, Handling needs to be enjoyable for her. Once you get the handling sorted get her out and drop her in a couple of two or three holers she will get the scent and sharp pick up what she is supposed to do. As others have said, a good feed before handling is a good idea, just persevere a bit with her and you will get there. There's plenty who don't use locators but personally I think it's a good idea with any ferret, 80 quid second hand to keep an eye on where she has gone etc is a bargain in my mind as a good grafter is priceless so not to be lost.

This is my opinion and no doubt there will be plenty of conflicting ones and people that disagree. This is a good forum mate don't let one person put you off.

All the best

If shes only a kit shes not going to do massive damage to you if she does bite. I let my kits bite me. They get fed up with it after a while. Put her on her back tickle her belly and spend time playing with her too. Best handling they can get is a bit of rough housing, their predators and need practise to get to grips with their prey. Thats why they like diving on you baring teeth. Its all in fun. Its learning to hunt the exact same way as pups do. The bites do get less and gentler. Dont need to learn them to hunt stick them in holes and let them go when their big enough.

Put a collar on it, pop it into a rabbit warren, Bobs your uncle Ken.
