Gaz_1989 9,539
If I've bred myself I just keep what no one else wants,of my current dogs, lad gave me Boots as it hadn't been sold,Don dog my mate just chose it out of the litter and shipped him over from Ireland, the pup I have Mario again I never chose any particular pup but had the choice of him or a cream dog,I said any will do me and I came home with him..if they are bred right then ANY from the litter could make half handy, there are NO guarantees with pups..some folk are far to focused on colours and what not,I don't give a fcuk what colour they are and big ain't always best either, the best dog I've ever owned I never picked myself either and the bitch that caught my biggest haul was another pup no one wanted from my mates litter..good luck with what you keep,it may or may not turn out as you expect..this game is a lottery ? True that. I've always put far too much thought into picking pups. My first running dog was a saluki/whippet/greyhound bred from 2 local (preban) hare dogs. I wanted to pick a bold, confident pup. One stood out a mile. He was hammering all the other pups. He was much bigger and stronger and he was the first one to run up and grab your trouser leg. "Great" I thought. Turned out to be the biggest c**t of a dog ever. Couldn't do a thing with him. He was aggressive, stubborn, ignorant, possessive. You name it. If it's a bad quality to have, he had it in abundance. I've no doubt that some of the problems were caused or at least exaggerated by me being new to working dogs and if it was now I would of done a much better job. But even so, he wasn't wired up right. Maybe by fate (?) he killed himself at 12 months old when he ran into a post while out lamping. After that I went for a steadier pup, more laid back. Not the one half asleep in the corner showing no interest or the timid one but just not the mental one either. That was my brindle bitch and she did turn out very steady and laid back. But she is also only one of only 2 pups out of the litter what made workers. The rest didn't make the grade for one reason or another, and she is certainly no world beater. My current pup I picked in March this year. Or rather the missus did. I had given up on the "picking a pup guidelines" by this point. I asked him to separate the dogs and bitches and handed my missus the 3 bitches. One had a kink in it's tail so I handed him that back and gave my missus the pick of the other 2. She picked the smallest and ugliest. It was lighter built than the others and half the size of the big dog pup which I really liked (now owned by a fella on here). She's now 9 months old, 25" and 55lb in weight and still growing so I don't think she stayed the smallest pup for long. Haha. All the best with your decision fella. 5 Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
Yep Fuji, could not agree more with your post mate. Except for brindle's, i've never been fussed on a brindle, though i've owned enough! My best rabbit bitch came as unwanted and half starved. Bet she turned out the bonniest out of that litter. My current bin licker, was chose in about 5 seconds flat. I was told what had already gone, which left about 5 and mine looked the most 'average', so i went with that..! Betcha he's the best out of em all too.. Quote Link to post
mushroom 13,272
My advise would be to go with your first gut instinct and the one that's picked you and if you've changed your mind on others since then go back to that first gut instinct, I'm happy with the pup I kept from my litter she's doing ok but i havnt bonded with her as much as I'd of liked and in my heart I know I let the one that was meant for me go due to me humming and harring to much and confusing myself and Iv regretted thought about and missed him ever since, best of luck.. Do you want this little bast@rd back mate? Tbh I wanted the devil one out of the litter and then for some reason chose this twot. Oh well shoulda woulda coulda lol Quote Link to post

Silversnake 1,099
Whatever you choose don't regret it, life is too short to waste time with regret. Choose your pup give it your best and enjoy yourself. I have wondered how 'that other' pup has turned out and it could easily send a sane man bonkers if you let it. Good luck and I hope you are happy with your choice. 3 Quote Link to post
scottish lurcher 185
I find best to go in to where pups are let them settle for 5 mins then I choose. but When I choose a new pup I try to avoid the ones jumping all over each other and the ones hiding in the corner. I much prefer the ones the come up and are a little reserved . They are happy to be around you and are not nervous but don't have to jump all over you, and I have found those one have made the best dogs for me . 1 Quote Link to post

Last night took him out for a run and he wiped some yank tourist out, then later he knocked two glasses of wine off a table. The two ladies were not impressed but he is a handsome chap so gets away with it 2 Quote Link to post

Fellman Mark 607
When I picked mine I thought I'd go for one that was full of beans and confidents when I got there there was a bitch that looked all shy last to come out of the box and quite then one of the other pups had ago at her and then she turned in to a tiger and soon put it in its place then went back to her box I ended up with her and I've never looked back turned out a good bitch just go with your gut and the type of temperament you want in a dog Quote Link to post
gnipper 6,552
I'd never pick the boldest out of a Collie blooded litter, but its personal preference. And I'd definitely never pick the shyest one 2 Quote Link to post

Maximus Ferret 2,063
I'd never pick the boldest out of a Collie blooded litter, but its personal preference. Personally I'd always pick the boldest, sassyest out of a collie bred litter. I've mainly kept collie bred runners for almost 40 years. I can cope with headstrong and hyperactive and I like drive but I've had a couple of "shrinking violets" and they're the ones that drive me mad. mattyg 1,862
I give the mrs a shortlist and leave her to choose. Decent parents and a bit of luck that's all you can ask for! 1 Quote Link to post
