Bedding Help Please

Recommended Posts

Barley straw for dogs that are likely to be going into their kennels a bit damp. Must not say wet, or I'll get thrashed :tongue2: The only material, as in duvet, blankets etc that will not leave the dog sitting on a wet surface is Vetbed, as moisture passes through it, but even that will get soggy if it is not changed frequently. Don't like shavings or chopped straw as the dog can't dig and make a nest from it. Whole straw is something that a dog can arrange to suit itself, and whilst it is messy, most will be retained in the kennel providing you have a barrier of about a foot in height to stop it falling out into the pen/run. I have found straw to be the warmest of all types of bedding: and yes, I've sat in kennels myself to test for insulation properties of various types of bedding

Nothing beats straw IMO too but do you not have trouble with the barbs in barley straw Skycat ?

Wheaten straw is the only thing I'd consider.

Any tips for stopping the little cherubs dragging vet bed out?

Mine have an entrance that then goes to the back of the kennel where there's another entrance where they have to hop over a raised board , onto there beds stops mine dragging beds / bedding out & also no draught once in there beds .

My run is a lean too on the side of my shed, I cut a door in the side of my shed and made a ply sleeping box.

I left a space under the floor which I insulated with rock wool, the I fitted a small underfloor heating kit on the ply floor, tiled it then fitted a square of carpet on top.

I just chuck away the carpet once a month and get more off cuts from work.

It's warm and dry and cheap enough to run.
