First Time Lurcher Man

Recommended Posts

Would you expect a child to do a mans job? Highly unlikely I'd assume? At least you asked for advice and will hopefully adhere to what's been said as starting a dog to soon is a recipe for disaster and more so if you have no experience with running dogs yourself..just enjoy rearing your pup for now, concentrate on recall, retrieve, livestock training etc,let it explore the countryside and hazards it will encounter..don't be tempted to take it lamping until its both physically and equally if not more so mentally ready for work..be a shame for both you and the dog if both were "sickened" before you get started so to speak...good luck

Put lamp a away and ferret for the dog for this season

I agree ...if you only just starting out and have no 1 to show you how to go about it then do a bit of ferreting with the pup have it around the nets let the pup mouth (hold) the rabbits in the net get it stead to the nets then when it's around 8 month I'd probably leave a bolt hole open just to let the dog have a run of one then renet the bolt hole then at 10 month I'd leave about hole open again let it run another one...then at 12 month find it acouple of nice easy sitters on the lamp to give the dog the best possible chance to catch...take it steady and easy you don't need to be out trying to catch 50 or 100 rabbits a night with a green dog...let it have a couple of runs and acouple of catches then end the night on high for the dog
