nothernlite 18,089
i would not call mine a speshalist a few pics of mine and some mates dogs that were handy on rabbits.dont bother with pics any more so a few from about 3/4 years ago lol would it because there's not as many rabbits on the ground now? Or you still taking that amount? Quote Link to post
oz0707 65
I know this is wrong section but goes with the daytime rabbiting. Why is it my terrier can find a single rabbit in the thickest bush and flush it out yet yesterday we were put in field and bunny was hiding in grass like they sometimes do. Dog was about ontop of this rabbit and couldn't find it for toffee. Like she was too excited trying to use her eyes instead of her nose. Reminded me of video here last week where that lurcher picked rabbit up right next to it doing the same. Quote Link to post
white van man 3,329
A specialist in one part of the country might only be average in another. Some dogs just don't get the numbers in front of them because the land they hunt on doesn't hold them. These dogs will have to work hard, use their nose, hunt up to catch (in the day) at night they might only have a couple of runs but catch a small number that some dogs that have lots of game put in front of them might miss. I was out where I live now and my dog catches quite a few. If I take him to where I'm originally from then he's lucky to get a few runs. If I brought one of the lads dogs from up there down here and lamped then they might put my dog to shame!! IMO a specialist would need to be good on any ground but I'm happy for mine to be a specialist on just my and my mates permission!! Edited October 25, 2015 by white van man 8 Quote Link to post
Omanyra 2,518
I'm probably going to upset someone or other. But I think if the dog can work the lamp, runs well enough and has a strike. It's all down to two things - stamina and number of rabbits on the ground. Pretty much any good lurcher with enough stamina and enough rabbits to go at, should be able to take mega bags. But its a rare thing when a man with the dedication to do it, a dog with the stamina and enough rabbits are all in the same place at the same time! I would put my money on it, that there are quite a few dogs that have never caught more than 20 in a night, who if their owners got them fit enough and had the rabbits in front of them, would equal the mega bags of some on here. Obviously the conditions play a huge part in taking the numbers to. Also hunting temperament to run rabbit dafter rabbit after rabbit I've seen a lot of dogs fall along the wayside in not having this, some dogs haven't got this and will do ok on running a dozen or so a night, but can't cope with running over a hundred a night Having the right conditions, the numbers, the right ground and the tight person are all great and do help, but, you have to have the right dog too..stop taking credit away from the dog Not many dogs have the ability to get the sort of numbers as seen above, and any that have are hampered but the lack of drive by some of their owners 1 Quote Link to post
kps1979 1,308
This little lass could of been a specialist rabbit dog, all she's missing is 10" of height, more stamina, and bit of recall, other than that she does ok! At least she retrieves rabbits so that's a start! 4 Quote Link to post

Omanyra 2,518
I think there is a lot in what you say matie You give a bit info and the young up and coming gunslingers are always wanting to make a name for themselves trying to take one of the big lads out So, people don't respond in the way that could help or entertain But good to read others views..... I suppose 2 Quote Link to post
