nikon 44
not a specialist but one of the best marking and rabbit dogs ive seen and had the pleasure to watch Edited October 23, 2015 by nikon 3 Quote Link to post
trigger2 3,145
with plenty of time and dedication then most crosses can get do a decent standard of rabbit catching. with all the different terrains to catch a rabbit on it would be hard to give a deffinate answer of which cross would be the best. Dewclaw69 484
I'd say a whippet x for sure . I'm running a 3/4 line bred greyhound collie. Gives it everything but a little too big for the fields on my permissions. Quote Link to post
nothernlite 18,088
Prefer the smaller type myself for the rabbits 4 Quote Link to post
trenchfoot 4,243
Any reasonable lurcher should be able to catch rabbits in most places. The specialist, to me, is one that can do that, but excels in one particular area of its trade. These days, I like a dog to hunt, catch and retrieve, rather than run a beam or stand over a netted bury. The ones that Ive found do best at that all have a good dash of collie in there. But I am biased Quote Link to post
wild rover 548
I think it depends on the terrain you work and the amount of rabbits on that land, you can only catch whats in front of you, going back 25-30 years ago we would come back from Scotland with regular big bags 75-150 rabbits, we needed a dog with stamina and that could take a knock, we had a mixture of lurcher x lurchers and some sheepdog cur crosses, they did a days ferreting then back out on the lamp once dark. Later years the rabbit population has dwindled, lucky to get 20-25 on the lamp, the same bushing and ferreting, have been using a small ACD X Grew for last 7 years, good all round rabbiter, ferreter and bushing, strong built and works good cover. 2 Quote Link to post
nothernlite 18,088
We beddy crosses I prefer for the bunnies ground very rough I do and the smaller type seem to suit it better all daytime I do with them 9 Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
The trick round here is speed and strike. Other ground requires a more robust type. A happy medium would be plenty of whippet and greyhound blood with a splash of something to toughen it up, be that bull, beddy, wheaten or something else. Quote Link to post
nothernlite 18,088
We bell 1/2whippet 1/4greyhound 1/4 beddy hopefully make a good we rabbit dog 1 Quote Link to post
Truther 1,579
I'm breeding some 3/4 whippet 1/4 springers when my bitch comes in season, was going to use a 3/4 whippet 1/4 beddy stud, but had a change of heart after seeing some pups to a full beddy out of her litter sister. Should be decent rabbit/ferreting dogs? Personally i'll be keeping one that goes more to the spaniel (if i get any like that?) for some more specialised work, might crash and burn, but you can only try your best? 2 Quote Link to post
