One of the best scopes I've got is a Hawke Panorama 4-12 x50mm EV with an illuminated 10.5 mildot reticle. For £130 quid or so, this is a beautiful little scope on my HW97K .177 and stays bang on zero

I love IR for lamping, you can see your cross hair better, or if your shooting feral pigeons in a dark roofed barn, where your black normal day cross hair would not be visable.

If your budget for a quality scope runs to better than Hawke Panorama series, then the Hawke Sidewinder series of scopes are a seriously good buy. I have one of these currently mounted on my Daystate

It's all relative mate. What one lad considers cheap or expensive then the next man may think totally different.

If you earn £100k a year you may not bat an eyelid spending £400-500 on a scope but to someone less well off then it would be totally out of the question.

Personally I love my mamba lites. Think they're hard to beat IMO.

Hope this makes sense lol

Yes it makes total sense, whats going through my mind is if I spend an extra months pocked money it may take me to that place where you spend as much as you can afford which someone quoted (spend as much as you can afford).

Personally I don't think you need to spend to much on a scope for PCP air gun ranges , all though I do have a Hawke airmax,

My self I cant stand MTC scopes

Best to have a look at some and see what you like, if you are going to put a add on NV on then you need to go for a side focus

Bushnell do SF 3-9x40 £215 and 3-9x50 SF £239 legend hd

Nikon do a pro staff target erf 3-9x40 AO for £174 this was the one I was going to get for my hw77

then there is the new pro staff 7 3-12x42 SF at £299 think I will get this one.

scopes are very personal, what one might consider to be good another might think it crap, depends on your eye and what you use it for, then you take into account the type of gun it`s fitted to and you could end up with a few pages of opinions, you will get a guide to what a lot use from the forums but that is no substitute to joining a club or mixing with a few to actually look through them and see what you like (but then you can get into eye relief settings and stock length), unless you are doing ft shooting and need a scope for rangefinding just stick to middle range scopes until you know what you need (and even then you could spend a couple of grand on one and find it does not suit you)

I have Had Nikon cameras for many a long year and there lenses have both optical and mechanical quality.

The New pro staff 7 that I have lives up to it's name but the side focus version is quite a lot of money.

If I spend 250 on the bushnell with side focus will it have the optical and mechanical quality of the Nikon (question to myself). You only get what you pay for answer to myself LOL.

I think more than go for a high degree of magnification, try to get as big an objective lens as possible for it's better light gathering properties and of course quality of optic (that is where the cost differs)

It also depends on what you want it for.

Super high mag, huge objectives scopes for Field Target are stupidly expensive. >£1000

Evening/night hunting in fields, something with a big objective medium mag.

Hunting rats in barns, maybe smaller objective and low mag.

Hunter field target. something in 40mm objective with 10x mag fixed.

Night vision, side focus, large objective and watch out for IR reflective lens coatings.

All my opinions, so make of it what you will, I went for a Hawke sidewinder 6.5 - 20 x 42 as I wanted something OK for all round stuff and it suited my eyes better than the MTC taipan.

Thanks for that feed back.

I should of said for high end springers and hw 100. just in case I want to move it around my other rifles. Hunting around the barns also in low light and down the field and in the trees.
