That's just daft! You need to measure from the ceiling down to their shoulder then subtract it from the height of the room.

I use a thin slat of wood with measurements wrote on it. As I find those metal tapes bend and flex. And you can put a pen mark and month on the wood to see how much the dog grows month by month.

And yes I know I'm fecking boring lol.
