we bailed bankers out, why not steel workers?

Because a banking crises would kill the country, it would affect every one of us badly. A crises in any other minor industry not so much. It's not fair, it's not supposed to be, but it's the way it is. Strategic decisions have to be ruthless.

I work in an industry that's not exactly healthy right now and my old man is being laid off as a result of the collapsing steel industry, shit happens unfortunately....

With all due respect mate (and I am a lifelong capitalist) the so called banking "crisis" wasn't a crisis at all, it was a fraud.

The people at the top of all the major investment banks and former heads who are now in government gambled with everyone's money and lost....and the worst bit is, they knew they were going to loose all along and actually bet against themselves so they made money twice !!

Never mind bailing them out, they should have been put in jail, new people bought in and then re- capitalise the banks.

But it gets better, they have got more money now and are happily carrying on the same as before !!!

I didn't say corruption wasn't present mate, lol. Just that some industries have to be saved with taxpayers money, others have to be let go.

If people are taking advantage of that then there should obviously be trials and heads on blocks.

No no mate, it gets better than that......none if this is currupt in the legal sense, it's all perfectly legal and sanctioned by the state !!........you see, the people that were in charge of the investment banks and their paid mouth pieces from Yale and Harvard are now the very people in government who make the rules that allow them to do this !!

Honestly, you couldn't make it up !!

These people don't "guess" stuff, they put themselves in the position where they knew the world would have to bail them out......they effectively created the gun that they then held to the worlds head ;)

It's clever as f**k that's for sure, I wish I had thought if it......unfortunately people like me go to jail for such antics

Yes that's right......let's have a really expensive enquiry where f**k all happens at the end of it.........just to appease public curiosity.....

......that's about as close as we will get to 'heads on blocks'......

I worked for British steel for 22 years and I could see this was going too happen honestly I could, I could hear the rumours 17yrs ago, 36 years ago my dad said the steel industry is going to the wall slowly, such a shame, before I was made redundant it cost British steel millions to change there name to corus,

How do you anti nationalisation guys stand on the issue that the French and Chinese states have just signed a multi billion pound contract to build the new generation of nuclear power stations in this country? :hmm: Genuinely interested, because we'll be paying over the odds for our electricity to the benefit of the respective overseas state governments for generations until its payed off. Our hard earned money is being given away by our own government, the way I see it. :hmm:

I think edf put the uk government off by their flag ship French version costing double initial price, then edf discovered that Hinckley was worth more than their company in total and got itchy feet. Then Chinese wanted to be 100% investor's. Now we're at this point. As long as its British labour I'm happy, I think Chinese investment is about 20%? Nationalising stuff always makes it far more expensive. I like the idea of nationalised transport and the NHS but not much else especially when the 02 arena cost the tax payer 900million for a marque.

My point is you and me will be directly handing our hard earned to the French and Chinese governments to pay for it all plus interest. Not only are we paying tax to our own bloody government, we're going to be paying it to foreign governments on top. Even if it was more expensive, I'd rather see the money spent by our government on our country.

Is the goverment closing the steel industry, answer is no, decisions are made in brussels by EU ministers not the spineless wasters in the ETON boys club, cameron could have reduced the redundancies by awarding british contracts to british workers, but is powerless to do so because of EU stratergy. Ruining communitys doesnt matter, cow toing to chinks and our natural enemy france, seems to be in fashion.

I wonder if things would have been different if we hadn't been in europe???

Some are saying that the government should bail the steel works out, but then others are saying if they aren't making a profit then it will be money down the pan.

Anyones thoughts on this?

I don't really beleive in nationalised industries at all but there is a good case to say that if they can iron £15 billion on a computer system that never worked and god knows how many billion on two aircraft carriers that we dont actually have the planes to fly off them.......then they cant really use the "money down the drain" excuse for not helping these people in some way.

My god!!.....am I turning into a full blown socialist !! ??

Nah, that will never happen !
