RossM 8,119
Put this in ferreting section but seeing as there was dugs there too I may as well post it here too. I'm off all this week so had arranged a days ferreting with joe1888 off of here. We had arranged for him to pick me up at 7ish and head to one of his permissions. He took his young dog glen and I took the ever reliable 11yr old codie, Cover was still very thick here and the warrens looked dormant full of leafs but a few holes looked freshly kicked out. Dogs showed very little interest in this but we set up anyway running a long net too, nothing at home here. Moving on a bit it was difficult to see any holes but we found a few and dogs were marking so we slipped in a ferret and she emerged pretty soon after entrance, we had netted a warren 20 yards away so left this one but codie was not moving from the other one, relying on her instinct we entered a ferret again and soon there was a bolt out an un netted hole...... b*****d!!! Had a look at on other bit and managed a rabbit from this bit and joe was all for continuing at this bit but I wasn't too keen as I could see fuckall for the cover lol. We decided to move on to a bit of my permission where the netting was a bit easier, it was only a 5 holer but dogs showed interest and I've never blanked from it yet. We slipped in a ferret and waited.... And waited! Plenty bumping going on and eventually a rabbit showed itself but went back down. More waiting and out with the disco carrot, a mark of 2 foot, no issue for a man of joes physique... About a foot down when a rabbit bolts, don't know how but net doesn't quite purse not only that the dogs are on other side of fence it runs along fencing towards ferret box then heads up the hill, me giving chase trying to hiss the dogs over/through fence, they eventually get into same field and are after it over the brow I get up a bit and they in pursuit still with rabbit heading back towards warren, just as it looks like it's getting away glen puts in a strike and stops it.... Almost perfect retrieve..... To me finally one in the bag. Ferret hadn't showed so joe kept going and broke through to another rabbit, 2 in the bag, ferret was on the move again, banging and thumping but again no bolt. Joe was on the spade again (f****d shoulder you see but I did do the back filling lol) he got about a foot and a half down when the ferret exited, all the tell tale signs of a kill, joe continued for about another 20 minutes and broke through but there was no bunny there, had a feel around but to no avail. Called it a day 3 bunnies in bag one ran to live another day and one we couldn't quite find. Few photos from the day. 7 Quote Link to post
