beast 1,884
beautiful! i worked saturdays on a stall up the high street, and used to treat myself in manzes for my tea when i knocked off. you have given me a great idea, i will take my old man down there next time i go visit, its been a few years since we were in there. where are you at maarshman, we grew up round deptford and new cross, the old mans still at blackheath and i have a sister down evelyn street All changed a little bit round there do you remember the Merry Cricketers pub on the one way in Lower Rd opposite the McDonalds its a been a newsagents for the last 10 years or so....proper old ruckers pub just up the road from the Farriers which is still there....there was some cracking boozers along Evelyn St a bit sore but plenty of characters.Im a Manzies man myself i reckon ive tried every pie and mash shop in London over the years and the best ive had is not even in London ! .... Tonys in Waltham Abbey gets my vote. yep, certainly has changed. used to get in the black horse now and then but mostly the birds nest, deptford arms, centurion, mechanics arms round by the market, or get up towards new cross; amersham arms marquis of granby, goldsmiths tavern. been in the merry cricketers on lower road, that takes me back.Years back a mate of mine lived in Mermaid tower...drank round that way a fair bit...amersham arms, Granby, Goldsmiths, New cross inn also seen a few bands at the Crown in Peckham...but the one that sticks in my mind was the Dewdrop inn on the green behind the club called the Venue...rough little boozer with a good crowd....was in there when Millwall played their last game at the old Den...years later my daughter ended up living in student accommodation behind the Newcross inn when she was at Goldsmiths...she only stuck it for a year...gave me nightmares new cross was always a tough area but not scary. nowadays it is very scary in places!! the venue was our friday night out for a while, always used to be getting in fights with either students, or bouncers who were just students earning a few quid of an evening. they hired some proper doormen in the end and mymatels stopped fighting in there then!! the goldsmiths always had students on the door, i remember one who was about 6'4" and enormous, got absolutely battered up and down the pub and out into the street by my brothers mate who is about 5'6 and 9stonemy dad worked in the dewdrop for many years behind the ramp, he was working as a stevedore 12 hours a day round surrey dock and west india dock, then the pub at night.i dont know how he had the energy but we needed the money so he just did it. i wasborn at 49 childeric road, about 50 yards from the dewdrop. got knocked down whenwe moved out about 1972, we were the last family in that row before the demolition we had a few good laughs round new cross, wes a gaf in pepes rd.that was in 79 bet its changed now,Haha, get all the South London contingent coming out of the woodwork !!My old man was born in friendly Street and myself on Shooters Hill. My great grandparents lived in a Vado however !! Lol My mother used to do her bollocks as my old man would take me down the market and all the boys in the stalls used to give me fruit and I would come home smothered in juice !! My old mans pals would come round and take me out up the west end if they had had a bit of luck, all blokes who had been nothing more than street kids round South London and just used what instinct god gave them to get a few quid as they had grown into men........they thought it was great fun to have this little lad climbing out of a roller and going in all these posh gaffs for something to eat and surrounded by a load of dolly birds! "He will be alright with us, we will take care of him" they used to say to my mother........she used to look a bit concerned but I think she was a bit nieve and didn't fully realise who these characters were !! Lol All the places you lads have spoken about bought back a lot of memories going down friendly street turn right onto ashmead road, thats where i went to primary school. the pub at the top of friendly street has closed down now, the name escapes me was it the clarendon? sssspoke to my brother last night, he told me the canterbury arms on the old kent rd is shut now too
