OldTrapCollector 377
Superb stuff John, that just shows that scent and a good site work a treat! That new site (the first of the two pics) looks like a good one too, you're starting to get your eye in now! Keep it up! OTC Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
Thanks fellas, I was very happy and surprised to have got one so fast! OTC, that was the site with the high bank! I thought at the time I had more sardines in the car to reset the trap but no, and it was too dark to do it when I got some so I'll reset it tomorrow and hope for another Quote Link to post

Guest JohnGalway
Cheers Conor I thought at the time I had more sardines in the car to reset the trap but no, and it was too dark to do it when I got some so I'll reset it tomorrow and hope for another You should have set it up without bait, I once caught 5 mink in 5 days in one cage trap and only baited it on the first day - the scent of the other mink and the residue from the initial bait will be plenty to get them in, if there's more of them. OTC Another lesson learned, I wouldn't mind so much only I'd discussed mink scent with another hunter and this one sure had left a lot behind. I guess I was too excited to think straight (that'll do for my EXCUSE lol). I won't make the same mistake again! I must mention that this was the cage which had been wrapped in a brand new out of the packet black plastic sack the day before, I had wondered if the scent of the plastic, which was strong, would put the mink off. Obviously it doesn't Quote Link to post

Guest Ditch_Shitter
Oh, don't worry; Of course Ditcy's reading this. In total bloody Awe! I'm also completely at a loss! Honestly; The enviroment John's setting in is almost photographicaly identical to where I have my pipe trap - and where I've long since tried a cage trap. Nothing! I've found mink shit within six foot of the pipe I've set in. I even accidentally caught what could only have been a mink (or else a marten with a thing for the water ~ which I doubt!) and had that bugger drag my trap up this very pipe before pulling free of it. I'm bloody certain mink run my 'River' location. I've even, last week, seen one within half a mile. Yet can I produce one??? I'm f*cking cursed! That's all there is to it! I've taken advice from some of the Legends of mink taking, both 'here' and in US. I've used the very kit They use. I've emmulated their methods. I Know for a cast iron, 22 Caret Fact there are mink around here. I simply Cannot catch one! It's getting monotoness Quite simply; I've been messing with traps all my life. I've honestly never yet failed to come up with what ever I've gone after. But these bloody mink? Useless! I simply can't understand it. There Is no rhyme or reason. Anyway, most sincere congratulations to JG. More power to ye, mate. Now go wipe the b*stards out from ye area completely! Maybe, next time I hit town, I'll buy me some sardines and black bags? Lord knows; I've tried every other bloody thing! I'm cursed! Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
Have you tried the specialised lures for mink Ditch? Item number 7219696116 on Ebay or here, I'm sure there are more online shops offering these as well but I've dealt with both of these places and they're honest dealers. Guest JohnGalway
No idea Lloyd, never looked since I don't live there Online is handier for me, I live far far away from anywhere so it's good to get stuff delivered to my door and the exchange rate with the dollar is good now too. Guest Ditch_Shitter
Have you tried the specialised lures for mink Ditch? Been there. Done that, John I tend to shop with Gerald Schmitt. Himself a very accomplished mink trapper - though, of course, the methods he gets to employ are different to what we're allowed here. But he personally reccommended 'Carmans' Mink Gland Lure out of a daunting range on offer. I have it on my shelf, right here. Actually, if ye can be arsed to search about on this boards archives, I did a thread where I actually employed this stuff. I detail the use of " Scent Holders ", which I learned about and made. I also tell a very salutory tale of what NOT to do when handling stuff like mink gland lure! Dig out some of my own earlier stuff and ye'll get a far better idea why it is I'm the forums laughing stock when ever poxy rotten mink are mentioned! It's been a long and weary old road for me! I think I may knock up another stick tomorrow. Fish oil's done me no good. I wonder if Gland Lure may bring some b*stard to that pipe trap? Guest little_lloyd
Ditch,..I reckon youll be lucky if you keep going, It took me weeks upon weeks to catch a Squirrel in a fenn, Now im bringing them in a few by the day I was watching the warreners Mink,Rabbit and Fox snaring video last night!! Now i know youve already tried the snaring but im not on about that!! He made some blind sets as he called them, Where he dug a hole in the bank, Then dug a hole on top of the bank to meet the hole!! Put a few feathers around as an eye opener to the mink or that gland stuff and it looked as if it worked a good un Maybe if you dig the hole for the pipe trap to fit you wont worry about having to set a fenn or snare. Then if Mink is working the top of the bank he will pop down to see what all the feathers are about and leave via the pipe trap,..Job done! Or he could be traveling the bank and want to investigate where the feathers lead to or the lure,..Job done Quote Link to post
