Guest MOLLY
My bull x bitch has snapped the ligament in her hock She has to have surgery just to be able to walk properly. The procedure will be to fuse the joint. Has anyone ever had this operation and what were the results? The 1st vet she saw (whilst on holiday) said she would be able to run/work again no probs, my vets have said there is a good chance she wont be able to work again. She has been refered to a specialist vets for surgery next week. Can anyone offer me any hope, will she still be ok for some ferreting work, short runs etc, will she still be ok for some light nights lamping (no marathon nights with Woodga anymore i know ) or will she probs have to be completely retired?? kiwi 4
i had a lockley hound with the same injury, was an expensive operation to fuse the ligament back together with no guarantee it would mend, got a second opinion from another vet {was trying to get a better price for the op lol} and he sent me home with a list of things to do, had to lock her up and limit her movements to nothing other than walking and swimming her in the sea twice a week {any water would have done} just to keeps the joint from getting to weak i guess. after a few week she was able to put her foot down and was able to hunt about 6 weeks later, was along time to mend but she had 90% of her movement back and was good for a few days work at a time before she got a bit sore. feed her greenlip mussel pills too from memory, used for treating arthritis in joints in humans. it worked on that bitch and she is still going well five years later just have to watch the amout of work she does. lockley hounds are a lab/grey and she was more grey than lab to look at. Guest arra
just had very similar thing done my lurcher bitch aged 18mths has just had major surgery she had her cruitate ligament replace in her right hind leg and all damaged cratridge taken away nearly three weeks ago now she is just starting to put her foot down now but will be out for this season as it takes 8 weeks to heal but the longer the rest the stronger it grows, so i have started to take her to the beach for gentle exercise on the wet sand that way she gets a little run with out any presure been put on the injury and will help the healing process. anyway hoe have you got on hope everything went okay
Dawn B 212
Which ligament Moll? Dawn.
Guest MOLLY
Had her op today.... The figure of 8 loop of wire at the back is to temporarily replace the ligament whilst the pin through the centre of the bones fuses. Kiwi, this ligament cannot be fused, it has to be the joint, plus the toes are bent inwards and cannot be used without the ligament (something like that) Dawn i cannot remember the name.....so much to take in today . But he really appeared to know his running dogs and had referrals from all over the North East coming in whilst i was there. He could have done the easy option of putting a plate at the back but it would'nt have given her as much hope of being able to work again as this procedure does. Its down to Jazz now if she works again or not. It should take 1 week to be able to weight bear and 8 to be able to run. Thanks everyone. MOLL an Jazz.x.

Simoman 110
Good luck Moll. My dog damaged his cruciate ligament jumping in February. Been to the vets several times who told me to give loads of rest before looking at surgery and looking back I wish I had asked for a second opinion. It took three months before I could let him run loose and at the moment (fingers crossed) he can run ok but I haven't dared jump him and he seems to kick out with his damaged leg.
