Recommended Posts

I've always thought this but just wanted to say it, the more time and effort you put in the better the rewards, had my little bitch here since 6 weeks old, she's coming up 5 next, and she's getting better all of the time. she might not be a world beater but definatley my favourite one I've ever owned in 40 years of keeping lurchers by far. whats your favourite dog you owned over the years

I have to say this one, my current dog. He's a 2 and a bit year old 3/4 grey 1/4 collie bred from a track dog to a working 1/2 cross.

The last year has been testing to say the least. His aggression with other dogs has tested me beyond reason, his need for input and attention is constant, his coat is the worst i've ever come across ( shedding hair permanently year round).

the bond i have with this dog is beyond anything i've ever experienced with any lurcher in 40 years of owning lurchers. Bloody collies.

the pic is a year old now.

yes/no with what you can get out of a dog,you can give a dog 100% of your time, and it might not be the dog you really want, even if you keep it2-3 years, some dogs just have not got it. as yet my 1x gsd x grey Buck prob my best lurcher as yet in the field, ive had good bags of rabbits in the lamp with,he got good nose, very good retriever ,good stamina and good pace, jumps well, full on with what he sees in front of him,and he very bidable good temp loves people and likes other dogs. the only down side to him for me, he is very senstive /wimpy temp when not working, he a strange dog really, because what he can do in the field power/size not much can get away from him, but tell him off fook me he takes it to heart, i have treat him with kid gloves, i thought bryn was bad he worse, but this is just living with the dog when not working,as said in the field i carnt fault him he done very good. i have found out though that gsds as big and tough as they are, can be just as sensitve as what collies are,but ive had few bullxs simlar maybe alot of breeds of dogs can be the same regards this kind of temp, or maybe its just me the way i am with a dog lol

Bullarab x bullmastiff, first hunting dog I ever owned at 14 years old. He was a big strong dog, good nose, hard on a pig with no back down in him and once he got a hold there was no pig going anywhere. Caught some very big pigs with him until the family moved up to Arnhem Land for a couple months and he chased a pig into a river and got taken by a croc right in front of me. Just about broke my heart, he was only 3. Have never seen a dog since that could be so physical and aggressive when hunting and then be an absolute teddy bear with other pets, stock, small children etc

bloody hell mate, was there no way you could save him,? did the croc just take him under and down deep. but suppose its the country you live in and crocs/snakes are part of it ,you have to just learn to live with the risks then , still a heart breaker to see more so as you say if a very good dog.

i want my dogs to work day, night, field, fen, moors, sand dunes, golf courses, and take most of what they get slipped on, not saying there going to be worldbeaters or perfect at anything or everything, but i really believe the more time and effort you put in, and the more you show them, and mess about with them, the better they will be.

and i think the more you like a dog, for whatever reason, then the more time you will put into it, more so if you had it from a pup, probably a lot harder work if you got a dog thats been passed from pillar to post, or locked in a coal house all day and night for a good part of its life.

Your bang on mate hardest part I find having a young dog that needs bringing on I find it hard to leave my old faithful behind when going lamping I know my blue bitch will have 9/10 or even 10/10 when as my pup is green as grass difference between a good night out and a shit night out ! Aslong I really get on with my blue bitch she's like left arm has never let me down bitch gives 100% even when the chips are down where as the pup has got that attitude would leave me in the shit lol
