Silly twat. If Cameron takes a hard stance with the Saudi's on this he may well end up costing the UK business. 'So what' I hear folks say, well that will cost good folks jobs and all because some daft twat thought he was above the law of the land.

Fortunately I think Dave has more sense than that.....

daves a wanker

Unless there's a dead pigs head handy

been there then have you?

no and reading there laws out there i never want to go there . most people only go there to get the good money that you can earn there. i rather earn less here than have to conform to the backward crap out there with chance of having your limbs chopped off or being near flogged to death .,i like living in a civlised country

I heard the son whining on the radio, giving it the British citizen shite, yet he's lived there 25 years,Ffs

Makes me laugh ,people go on about foreigners coming over here and respecting our laws but the British can't do the same when abroad ,talk about double standards then when they get arrested its wailing to the papers and British rep or contacting MPs !

Why the hell want to live in a alcohol free country beyond me anyway.

Jacknife. All Saudi companies own 51% or more of any business conducted in their country so the comment about someone with a great wad of cash to be handed out to release someone who has broken their laws just doesn't stack up. At that level of business the Saudis make the decisions, not the 49%. In any case, most of the expatriot community is actually from the likes of the Phillipines, Indonesia, Erotria and such like. These are the guys who take most of the risks with illicit stills making the local Sidiqi which by the way would run a 747. When they get caught it's good night Vienna. This Brit expat may have been a bit of a fool to himself but in fairness he's only doing what the whole expat population are doing in everyday life. Each and every 'Compound' usually consists of between 4 and 8 villas, housing about 10 to a dozen workers. Then you have your cook, cleaners, gardeners and drivers. Thing about it all is that generally any partying that goes on is around the pool, barbeque area and only usually on a Saudi weekend. (normally a Friday) Now you notice I say party. You've been out from 6am till 1pm and then 4pm till 8pm in the most hellish heat you can imagine. What are your first thoughts after having a nice cooling shower? Damn right pal. A DRINK. Now this geezer somehow has dropped an almighty and yes I agree from the point of view of Law he should be punished. The severity of punishment varies to such an extent that death is not uncommon. We are not talking police and judges and juries, we are talking about the Saudi general public destroying someones life. This chap needs sending home and Al Jazeera letting everyone know why he's gone home. Not publicly flogged and then sent home. Just reading Forest of Dean Redneck's comment, the whole reason for going anywhere in the world is surely to better yourself and the welfare of your family and if that means going to an Arab country so be it. It might seem harsh but you have to make the best of without being caught out. Good luck to this person.

Im sorry but I have no sympathy. Its not about citizenship, its not about age, he will have know the laws, he will have known the consequences, yet he still decided to transport the wine? To me he deserves the lashes and even more so he should accept that and take them like a man and try his best to stare the lasher in the eye afterwards, smile and wink. I was brought up to take punishment when deserved and as such I turned out alright (I think). Im not hard at all but Im hard f*cking faced when I want to be.

Everyone is looking at this as if its harsh penalty...I look at it and think if our punishments matched theirs then there wouldnt be so much crime and scumbags causing suffering for innocent people.
