I don't know why folk are so hung up on getting a genuin 1/2 cross,,or3/4 ect,,,,so what if there's a bit of something else in there....

Understand what you are saying Ray. The one Hancock dog I got left is out of hector (beardie half cross) and is not keen on fox but puts plenty of edible game in my freezer he hunts like a demon takes

That's the thing.... 'I want a genuine half cross, then I know what I'm getting'....except you don't as the parents have not been worked, ergo, you have no idea of what you're going to get.   I've

Good thread with some differing views and opinions. I can't for the life of me figure out why people would buy these pups...non working parents, grand parents, great grand parents etc so no graft in the blood at all. There's no selective breeding to retain good traits and remove bad traits as there's no graft. Then there's the price, which is quite dear but made worse because of what i've just stated and going by some of the posts, you just don't know what you're gonna get. Massive gamble taking on these pups imho.

Breeding dogs isn't a guessing game, good breeders stack as many odds in their favour as they can, in the case of lurcher breeding using parents that are workers, dogs that have done a bit and better still from tried and tested lines etc

In the case of some of these puppy producers they advertise constantly, which sticks in people's minds, they use others with clout to build dogs into something their not and they produce loads of pups

Collie crosses especially the first cross overall are a mediocre working dog, they are never going to be world beaters but they will suit novices, part times and those who get their experience from lurcher books..I know nobody who hunts to the volume of myself and others with the same hunting ethos as myself who use first cross collie x greyhounds, or indeed any first cross

I have no time or interest in puppy produces, handcock and others reap financial rewards from breeding dogs, so if, from time to time they get a bit negative feedback, then so be it...it comes with the job...

There will be some folk who have been lucky enough to secure a decent dog from the likes of handcock but when you consider how many pups have been bred, it's not a great return rate, but who cares? Not mr handcock, he's selling pups and that's the fundamental difference between dog breeders and producers of pups

I had a first cross from Hancock, got her in 1992, she was sired by the Rufus the red dog which I'm told was a good producer.

Anyway, a great wee dog, took all quarry and the best nose I've ever seen in a dog.

Skin like a rhino and indestructible feet, work all day most days and never seen her jaded or had any injuries.

Could have been the right dog in the right hands at the right time I suppose, or maybe I was just lucky.

I doubt I would have a Hancock dog now as I do think he has lost his way (if he ever had one) regarding work ethic.

I would say his dogs originally seemed to be better than now, or perhaps we see things differently as we age.

Hancock is an easy target though, which to be fair is self inflicted and to be honest I doubt he's worried about what is written about him if he bothers even to read it.

There's easily as much shit out there bred by real deal dog men from two supposed super dogs, they're just not so easy to spot.

I've known guys to change dogs like their underwear, always got a litter on the ground or a dog coming from so and so, real dogs don't you know.

They all disappear at some stage, never to be mentioned again.

If they've owned a Hancock dog, or a dog bred from Hancock dogs, feck me, that's branded in their memory, never to be forgotten the others conveniently forgotten.

I am in no way defending Hancock, but to all the folk who have had a shit dog from him, let's hear about the other shit dogs you've owned or seen.

Or is it only because he sells them as a living?.

I agree with most of what you've posted there mate, but at the end of the day hancock breeds for 1 reason only...money, he doesnt care if his pups are good bad or indifferent as long as they sell, thats his number 1 priority, he's a puppy farmer 1st last and always, I would rather be without a dog for a year or 2 before I would put money in a puppy farmers hand, but thats just me

I couldn't and wouldn't argue with what you say, I don't think Hancock would either, he's quite up front about the fact he produces pups en masse for financial gain.

To throw another point in, and I've bought one Hancock dog and doubt very much I would buy another.

How come after all this time he's still in business?, please don't tell me it's gullible uneducated greenhorns keeping him afloat, you only have to google his name and numerous threads akin to this one pop up. It might have been the case years ago folk could be duped, not now in the days of the www.

You can only fool people for so long, how come after thirty odd years he's still going?.

Could it be we only hear from the disillusioned unhappy customers?.

When I left his yard, pleased as punch 3 1/2 years ago, sally said " you'll have your hands full with that one" She had a look akin to fear on her face , and she was bang on lol.

Has he always been a pain then? Just think if you had picked a different one. The 3/4 is meant to be the best allrounder isn't it
