Yep Phantom F4 amazing aircraft great looking thing

One question I've never had an answer to is the Vulcan (except when the V bombers were all white) had an almost traditional camouflage pattern on the wings and fuselage. What I don't understand is why wasn't the underside duck egg blue or white as per traditional camouflage why was it the same as on top????? :hmm:

I found this out on Monday... see if anyone else knows lol

Good question, maybe because as a strategic bomber it would operate from high altitude so making camo on it's belly insignificant. Whereas a lower altitude tactical bomber would be far more visible and so benefit from a sky coloured belly...... maybe? LOL

Yep, its main role changed from high level to low level after the shooting down of the U2 in 1960 in its new role came the new paint scheme on the upper surfaces, but still white underneath, this then changed again after it was noticed it was highly visible from above when it banked steeply... of course this could a load a crap as well lol :D

Well, it might have worked but it misses the fact that operationally the Vulcan would fly very low so as to keep out of radar view.

I stupidly assumed a similar approach would be taken as what the yanks took when bombing Japan, very high altitude, but they did that simply because the Japs had nothing that could touch them at that height.

The only time the Vulcans were used in anger was the Falklands, I believe, so I should have known better. LOL

Correct.. Out of the 3 V bombers only the Vulcan was really suitable for the new change in strategy. The Victor and Valiant airframes stressed terribly compared to it because they were designed to operate in the thinner air at altitude. Thats why out of the 3 the Vulcan had by far the longest service as a bomber.

Sorry man, lost interest as soon as the first two in the list of "top 20 fastest planes" were the f-117 and B2.. :D

Did you look at the Phantom? I never realised it was that fast :icon_eek: Keep going Mal, I was surprised what was the fastest thing to go around the world, my cheeks would be stuck to my ears. f-117 and B2 are snails compared to the others. :D
