fireman 11,000
Sad day. Saw one at an air show as a kid, that distinctive Vulcan howl as the olympus engines revved up and drank the air in over the intakes as it came down the runway will stay with me for life. My old Dad was a fire chief at a major experimental military air base when we were kids and got took to many a air show or military tattoo's, we used to sit in the fire tenders and watch the planes and show's from the best front seats .Many a memory just like yours Malt and any old classic plane like the Vulcan,Hunter,Fairy Gannet etc flying high will make me remeber the old boy telling us about them with a real passion when we were kids ...

Sad day. Saw one at an air show as a kid, that distinctive Vulcan howl as the olympus engines revved up and drank the air in over the intakes as it came down the runway will stay with me for life. Where my parents live, where I grew up, we were quite privileged really. They've probably seen the Vulcan a dozen times this summer, over the years obviously many more times. A couple of months back my dad saw it point it's nose up and floor it, climbing like feck and making a hell of a racket, right over the village. He'll take that memory to his deathbed I'm sure. It's not uncommon to see Spitfires, Hurricanes, The Lancaster, even Wellingtons and Dakotas. As well as modern aircraft obviously. Seeing a couple of F-15s real high, having what looked like a mock dogfight was cool. The Vulcan was something special though..... I'll miss hearing that. A couple of Russian fighter jets were in Lincolnshire not so long ago doing dogfight training with the RAF on exercise, saw them a few times chasing each other, loud and low.
paulus 26
back in the `s the west would get together and put on a show of force by flying up the east German border, it was usually called "Bold gauntlet" it was a sight to behold, aircraft from all over Europe and further afield. steve66 3,562
That's when the Indians went home and claimed to have run rings around the RAF, caused a bit bad feeling as it was no where near the truth

Born Hunter 17,817
That's when the Indians went home and claimed to have run rings around the RAF, caused a bit bad feeling as it was no where near the truth I think there's a bit of history and rivalry between the IAF and RAF. Simply, the Su-30 has better manoeuvrability but the Typhoon has better systems. Superior missiles and systems beat manoeuvrability anyway, the Falklands proved that. But war games will never really show who can do what and everybody wants to bluff and bullshit for national pride. The Typhoon seems to be one of, if not, the most effective 4th generation air superiority fighter out there. I think even some 5th gen fighters would be a little twitchy having to face a Typhoon.
