The Last Vulcan

The Harrier Jump Jet was my second favourite airfix kit as a kid. :D

Modern warfare aircraft for a pure out and out fighter, the English Electric Lightning for me

There used to be one of those in an old yard by the A1 at Newark. It was there for years, covered in graffiti, on show for everyone that drove by. Then a few years ago it had to be scrapped, I think it was in a dangerous state or something.

Yes I remember that one, I also remember seeing them at Finningley airshow they were such an aggressive looking but beautiful thing.

Malts correct the fuel consumption was horrendous, I recall watching a program several years ago and it said something like it used the equivalent of a Ford mondeos fuel tank every 5 seconds

I saw them at the RAF Brawdy air show here in Pembs. They used to do a demonstration where it would take off and go straight into a climb. The speed ot went from shiny noisy beast a few hundred feet in front of your face to speck in the sky was unreal. The tornado F3 I remember seeing do the same sort of demo was no slouch at it either mind.

The Phantom I liked too, V tail with radar nose cone, not seen one in years, anyone seen one lately?

Last time I saw a phantom was at RAAF Williams, Point Cook Base, Victoria, Australia. It was static at the time but I was assured it was still flying, but that was back in August 2010.

There's another one, the A-10 Tank Buster. :D And the Red Arrows look like the old Knat?

Think they were hawks by then, not 100% on that though. :hmm: I remember sitting in the cockpit of a mock up one.

In the 80's a number of Hawks were modified to carry sidewinders to operate in an actual wartime interceptor role. I believe it was done to bolster fighter numbers to repel a large scale Soviet strike. Although they lacked the sophisticated systems a proper fighter would have, the intention was that they would be guided by Tornadoes enabling them to act as close range fighters.

I thought that was quite interesting myself, how a cheap jet could still be used in a modern wartime role.

Yep Phantom F4 amazing aircraft great looking thing

One question I've never had an answer to is the Vulcan (except when the V bombers were all white) had an almost traditional camouflage pattern on the wings and fuselage. What I don't understand is why wasn't the underside duck egg blue or white as per traditional camouflage why was it the same as on top????? :hmm:
