Is It Ever To Late To Up Skill To Better Yourself

Recommended Posts

I wanted to change my life and studied hard for three years to get a better job or way of life at the age 36 . i had to study full time but work weekends to help pay the bills. Also I have got a good women behind me that was as commited as I was as we had a small family to keep . Times where tight I'll not lie but we're a happy bunch so we cut our clothe so to speak . Now I'm working earning good money in a totally different way from my life before . It can be done and see it as a new challenge and it can be quit exciting as well good luck !

Course it's not too late in your thirties.

About the certs. Sounds like they are taking the piss... The skills and qualifications are yours. The certs in anyone else's hands other than yours mean nothing. To my mind they have no right to hold them as they are restricting your ability to 'ply your craft' which is not allowed. Is there a governing body that issued the qualifications/certs contact them direct and explain what your company has done and ask them to reissue to yourself. They may charge you an admin fee or something though. If they can't see if there is a union you can sign up for that can give you some legal support.

It's pretty normal in my industry to include financial tie ins when training people but these are usually along the lines of paying half the training if you leave within a year or so of the course but this would need to have been agreed in advance to be enforceable

What company came in and did the certs with you? Just contact them and ask them for a copy. They are yours after all.

I used to work for a cement production company and they were of the same opinion when I was looking for my loading shovel, forklift, quarry truck tickets.

So I contacted the company that came in and did them with me and got all of them that way.

It's never too late this day and age, in fact I don't think there's ever been a better time to 'return to learn' I met a woman back in the summer, late fifties I would say, she was wearing a 'student' badge, I asked what she was studying "social work" she replies, I asked what background she was coming from, not much! She said went on to say she'd only ever kept the books for her husband who ran a little taxi firm, he traded her in for a younger model and left her in her tod, kids grown up and gone . . So she didn'tt want hang around and is now on her last years of a degree. She choked when I said she was inspirational! It's not always that simple, as I am finding out personally, but if you want something enough, there's little that can stop you

A lot of mature students go down Nhs or social care degree route as they are free courses and they receive bursaries etc..

I've retrained plenty, I'm a welder, coded, fair amount of experience waiting on an level 3 which I completed this year, when I can afford to I might get offshore quals, its a bad time to get into welding though bud, I'd try and retrain on another CNC or head into programming? Lots of people getting laid off, oil is down steelworks closing Hinckley may go to Chinese companies and polish to fill in for cheap labour or starter roles. Bit grim. But go for what you enjoy, buy the time you've qualified and gained some experience the industry may have picked up. Atb Joe

the wife uncle has his company that does heat reduction system's and pipe work this is what has me going towards wielding but the sticking point to line of work is 99% is outside of Ireland but very good money.

see they never wanted me to do them in the beginning incase I did leave. With in a couple of years. Only I push for the courses because I was waiting one other people to program the machine for me and It was taking longer and i was getting Notting for it so I pushed for them it was 1500 pound sterling a course. Witch they paid for in full I think that's why they think they can hold on to the cnc ones. Thank all. Bob
