Mark r 208
With all the foreigners killing them the scrubbas you shouldn't killing them as well, and besides a water with pike in is a healthy water they mop up the dead and injured fish before eating all the live ones 3 Quote Link to post
jocky 198
well said mark r. there natures way of stopping fish diseases spreading. if you kill jacks you could still be killing a female fish, that could grow to a good size.. if there does get to many pike in a water they will eat there own to sub stain a health balance of fish to feed on. 1 Quote Link to post

jonnie bravo 572
Some interesting replies to this thread. There seems to be two main sticking points to this thread. 1. Killing a magnificent fish I agree that pike are great, I have enjoyed catching them for years. But in my eyes they are part of an ecosystem, much like a fox. If I struggled to catch pike then I wouldn't take fish from that water as they clearly are low on numbers. If someone said on THL that you shouldn't hunt foxes? I was expecting a more open minded response to be honest. 2. Few of you would entertain eating pike Again seems a little closed minded, other than those that have actually tried it. A few have said urgh with no experience in trying it? I'm no EE and I don't believe in taking everything out of a water like some I have seen but taking the odd fish for the pot is well within my rights as a fisherman and sensitively done can have a positive impact on the water as can predator control in other ecosystems but you guys already understand that right? 4 Quote Link to post
northern lad 2,292
With all the foreigners killing them the scrubbas you shouldn't killing them as well, and besides a water with pike in is a healthy water they mop up the dead and injured fish before eating all the live ones Wrong Who told you they "mop up sick and injured fish before eating live ones",thats absolute nonsence.....have you ever done much piking? Some days they love a deadbait, other days its live or nothing....and before someone points out a livebait is an "injured"fish and behaving like one, depending how you hook them/rig you use, they act very much like a healthy fish ,some waters season in and out I can fish and not get a sniff on a deadbait, and vice versa.Dont get the impression Im for the killing of all pike,I was into pike conservation from the early eighties, made my own unhooking mat(couldn't buy them then) and got rid of the "All pike must be removed from the water" rule on the fishery I was bailiff on.Having said that,on a prolific water with a lot of jacks in ,removing a 5lb,er for the pot now and then will do no harm and possibly do some good by removing some of the competition for prey fish (the poorly ones ),which are needed by the bigger pike Removing large pike from a water is a definite no no,the jack population thrive with less threat from a larger predator, also removing them to stock another water invariably ends in disaster, they do not adapt to new surroundings/environment well at all, more often than not going belly up emaciated, over weeks/months 3 Quote Link to post
