Scott Ferguson 1
Hi Folks We have a Lurcher cross deerhound puppy - now at 13 weeks old. I was looking for advice on what kind of bones to give her to chew on etc? So much conflicting info out there. Chicken bones - wings etc seem to be popular? Although we have concerns! We actually keep chickens also and at present she gets on with them fight (usually wants them to play with her) would feeding her raw chicken bones not start making those chickens look like walking noisy food? We also have a house rabbit who she gets on fine with also...so same question! thanks Quote Link to post
bonehead 92
My 13 week old pup eats knuckle bones but she had her first hickey thigh the day and loves them Quote Link to post
Gareth12 225
House rabbit?? Hmmm that could go wrong if you intend working the pup!!?? Quote Link to post
Scott Ferguson 1
No she wont be a working dog...its quite funny really we have two cats also and the cats and the dog are pretty much staying out each others way...the rabbit and the dog have been nose to nose a few times - neither looks very concerned. We were told as long as she 'grows up' woth it it will be fine - just dont let them both outside together at the same time! What is a hickey thigh by the way? Quote Link to post

Scott Ferguson 1
I see a lot of folk saying to give them 'a raw meaty bone' - what kinds of bones are they talking about when they say this? Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
You could teach a working lurcher to respect a house rabbit. Wouldn't be difficult. Feeding chicken or rabbit won't affect how the dog sees your pet rabbit or pet chickens. That's down to you. Chicken wings are good food but it won't be long before he's swallowing them whole after a crunch or 2. Lamb racks or whole chicken carcass would last him a little bit longer. 1 Quote Link to post
Scott Ferguson 1
Right...think ill start her with a lil lamb rack - see how she gets on! Thanks Quote Link to post
PeterE 25
Hi Mate, http://www.naturalinstinct.com/ try this site for info. also Bulmers (not cider) do 450g for about 60pence (raw mince etc) any bone not cooked should be ok. buy direct from a proper local butcher, might need a 2nd freezer though. nice dog, ps I thought a house rabbit was a bedroom toy PE 2 Quote Link to post
Scott Ferguson 1
So we went to the butchers - butcher didnt really have what we needed so she got a piece of boneless lamb (think it was brisket)....I cut off a smaller bit for her to have a chew on (about 7 " by 2") she chewed on it for a minute then swallowed it whole... er...should I be worried? I found a young wild rabbit it was about eight days old and brought it home and hand reard it my lurcher never touched it 1 Quote Link to post
