I don't know about the best but one of the most consistent was my digging partners that died last years bitch. Bred by a man of here she was an we had some good days sport with her ,she also developed the knack of finishing the job without paying the price. She also had a brain on her and knew when to be sensible and have a healthy respect .

One of the best digs was to her , not because of the depth of the dig but because of the account her foe gave . A three holer not overly deep but awkward under a prickle hedge,round and around for a while until she got it bottled up . Dug down having the craic confident in the bitch breaks threw expecting like the other outings we had for the job to be done , for the bitch to be on a serious customer . I put my hand in to lift it out and as I grabbed the fox , it was a vixen , I felt a old broken snare around its neck . This one was a born survivor and she managed to slip my grasp and run of after I had removed the old snare . My mates bitch was wobbling and all over the shop for a while but soon was good after a bit of tlc. Good bitch done what she had to do good fox done what it had to do lol. Will stay with me for a while that one for a few reasons .

A couple of years ago my mate got a call out from a farmer who had just seen a fox go to ground. The farmer had been combining & had seen a fox go to ground in a single holer out in the wheat field whilst cutting....

The lads turned up, found the hole & entered a Russell bitch.....

That fox drove that bitch back to the entrance several times, showing itself a couple of times at the entrance as well, with neither giving up..........I have to say, this bitch was nowt special, she could get the job done on occasion, but was no great digging dog.......but they got a mark & dug down....

When they broke through, they lifted the bitch & dispatched a dog fox.....only to find that it had both it's front legs cut off, half way up, by the combine that afternoon......

They were left with mixed emotions that afternoon....... Of pity & sheer admiration for that fox, battling to the end......
