I've heard loads of times that keepers were meant to have put them down but I don't believe it myself, black rabbits (melanistic) crop up naturally.

Its just a genetic mutation. If you look at a rabbits coat (agouti) you will see its made of many colours, including black, white, blue, sandy etc. All the coloured rabbits are, are a genetic mutation

One of our farms hold a good few blacks but no keepers are on it.

They say it's unlucky to catch a black rabbit. Mixi or sommat worse will follow...

Worse does follow... As a kid we hunted a big bit of ground on the back of our estate.. Caught the odd black rabbit there. Well they brought bad luck, that land is now a big tescos with a whole new housing estate being built on it too.. There went a chunk of my favourite mooching ground..

There was a small field all walled in which we spotted a blackie in, me and my mate took a ferret, the few nets we had, my little whippet and he had some weird mongrel.. Nets set, ferret in, dogs quivering and out shoots blackie from an unseen bolt hole in the field.. He was gone and away.

I reckon someone caught him eventually though as that field has the foundations down now for a new Liddls..

Beware the black rabbit lol

Nearly 30 years ago, me and a couple of mates frequented a boozer that a few will know, the Running Horses, in Lydiate, on the edge of Altcar estate. The Landlord back then was a crackin bloke, who, knowing what we loved to do, took as much game as we could bring in and knowing we could bring it in would pay us both in money and booze!

All good, The Runnies was a great pub back then, well frequented and jam packed on the weekends with local live music on. We loved the place!

The fields at the back of the pub held rabbits and one cheeky bugger was black as pitch. Now the landlord liked them bunnies and told us full well to leave em alone, his Mrs & daugher loved seein em in the mornings and we respected that.

Now due to our activities the estate started to get a bit warm, as they tend to do when three rag arsed fools are blastin and doggin feck out of everything on there for profit...

So one flustraiting night we were returning our 4.10's (with them massive homemade silencers) to the Landlords outbuildings (he stored em for us!) And my mate decides we aint got enough gear. He marches right round the back of the boozer and takes aim, 'what yer doin' i askes as 'I' put the lamp on.. BANG! One down where it feeds and another that hangs on too long.

Guess what... That first was the black one!

We laughed at the divelment and didn't give a toss for the poor kid... Hanging one bunny up with the Pheasants in the shed and 'skimming' the black 'un as we couldnt risk taking it back.

It was the following week it all started, chased all over the estate and ditching all the game. The next time out had us swimming the 'Cut' in November, as every escape had been blocked by keepers, helpers an plod. After that i had the keeper hiding 'in' my landrover (the locks were crap!) And we walked home. Blagging that we'd got a taxi home to the plod the next day when i went to pick it up.

After that, i returned to find all my tyres slashed, with police landy's storming up the main road ready to pick us up and if you've never done a dusty on yer rims you've never lived mate!

The icing on the cake came after that... Bang to rights coursing on Altcar estate!

Now i've always blamed them saluki dogs we ran at that time, for making us wanna walk them fields an run them hares, only to be foolishly nicked... But lookin back, with this thred in mind, it could all be because we killed that bloody black rabbit...! ;)
