Restocking Really Low Rabbit Numbers

I'd be pretty fecked off if someone stocked my ground.

 

May be you should find somewhere that needs rabbits removing.

 

Can't see any landowner/farmer being happy about this.

The farm at the back of my house is one I restocked and did it in conjunction with the landowner. He keeps coursing greyhounds and likes to have rabbits on his land. I had overhunted it a bit and numbers were low so we went to a farm belonging to a pal of his and ferreted a few. After we released the ferreted rabbits the population shot up and even now, 10 years later, I can nearly always get a run or two without walking too far.

Obviously if I want to bag up I go further afield.

No farmer wants a plague of rabbits but most round here don't mind a few.

Same with foxes as it's dairy country so they're not too much bother. Twenty miles North or west you're in sheep country and they hate them there.

Let about 20 out last winter local,,,,,,,,,when I drive by now can see good few rabbits big and small out feeding where there was never many rabbits before,,,,,,,I will only use them for lamping midweek..........

By stocking them then they bring in the fox so it's a win win

Seeing as everybody swears by it and there's a serious shortage of bunnies all over, I'm now selling bunnies 50 for a breeding family lol

is there not an island off Scotland where they need to cull 20,000? Be a waste, should let people take them for restocking places

It would be good to do it just before the season ends ready for the breeding season

plenty of good healthy does make sure you put them down existing bury,s

it works, my friend is proof for me that it works. More does than bucks

lets bring old bugs back. about time too...

There is a fair bit to consider, when re-stocking land that is devoid of rabbits...

 

First thing to think about is why is it so....?

 

Why ain't there any rabbits on a place...?

 

If the answer is simply that a well executed,.continuous cull has reduced the numbers to zilch,..well,..there is no reason to believe that the population,..(if left well alone),..will not rise, Phoenix -like from the ashes,.once more.....

 

However,..if the land does not suit rabbits/hares,.. it is frequently, a wasteful exercise....

 

For those with a hankering to flip a few down,..then the only real way, is to suck it and see....

Good point Phil, Pasture land with dairy herds is the place a mate of mine restocked

with good success, i would put some thought in to where you place the shooshoi,s

as expressed by Phil Lloyd, and avoid places you know where they use .22 bullet rifles

because i know pest control must be carried out, but for feck sake you havent got

to shoot every effing rabbit on the ground, and trust me ive met a few of that type that

then complain there is no rabbits on the ground, then off they go to decimate the next

lot of fields, idiots.I know the rabbit is a pest and they can cause a lot of damage,

but manage their numbers correctly, to acceptable levels, and you will always

have your sport, and a happy land owner lets not make them make them extinct

because lets be honest with ourselves over the years we have all played our part towards

as in the low numbers in places that we are now witnessing. its not all our fault but over hunting

has contributed in a big way... neeep what,s up duck,,, LoL..

If i told you the equivalent of your forestry commission (staatsbos beheer) in Holland are actually trying to get rabbit numbers up because of theire grazing habits,which benefit vulnerable plant species (orchids) ands such alike, am sure it would create some doubtful faces.

I remember watching, actually have a copy on video vhs it was David Attanborough

and the film was called The Country Fox, it was filmed in Somerset i beleive

at the Somerset Levels, did any one see it, COR their was some shoosh their,

Brilliant. I hope im still at the lamping game when im 65-70 yrs of age, i am addicted to

lamping, but so you all know me and my lamping partner left a place alone last season

to hopefully let numbers build, and guess what????? they did as true as i type this post

and you know what else lamper,s it was actually very pleasing, we popped their last night even with a

full moon we caught 4 but trust me the numbers are their because i have filmed them at dusk..

its FECKING teasing us. Has any body else noticed the rabbits are digging deep this season

we must be in for a bitter cold winter. Any body seeing fat round the rabbits kidneys yet
