Guest vin
I Bred my best hob this summer with a mates best jill and he gave me a couple of hob kits. Today was the day to try out "Son of Chuckles". It was a misty start to the day as the sun rose on the valleys etc etc. I was ready to go at 1st light and on my way up the hill as the day began..I had brought the young hob and his dad to try and see if I could find him a nice easy starter warren to begin his training. The dogs were marking a few holes as we climbed higher to the more steeper bankings,But I wanted a nice small shallow easy start for the young fella. Eventually we got a nice mark on an easy open warren, not so easy for the dogs but a nice lay out for ferrets..So I dropped Chuckles in with his lad following behind.. it wasn't long before the rumble erupted into a bolt from a very quick bunny who made it past the dogs and off into another warren to live another day..No problem, the 2 ferrets popped up from same hole right behind the bunny so I knew it was game on..and the young fella was chuckling and getting jiggy with it etc etc,,happy days so far..there was no more bunnies in the warren so I moved on. I then found a nice 3 hole warren in some nettles against a wall and the dogs were marking strong..So I thought it was time for a go alone with the young hob..They usually hate the nettles but he didn't even acknowledge them and just dived straight down and was onto a bunny in seconds..I could hear him rolling with it as it managed to escape his grip and made a mad bolt for it,Straight into the dogs jaws about 2 foot from the hole..Sorted,but the Hob turned around and flew back down and straight onto another but this time I could hear the tell tale sound of a scream that become a muted scream and I knew he was getting to grips with his prize..I gave him a few minutes and dug him out ( 2ft spit and a shuvel ). He had eyeballed it then chinned it from below.. Happy chappy I am now... lol. I did a few more as the morning moved along using the young hob as he was scratching like mad in the box and raring to go..after he had bolted anything I ran the older hob through to check if he was working the holes and not leaving anything and luckily he wasn't.. We came to a spot that always has a bunny hiding under some old metal roof sheets piled against a wall..its noisy below so you can tell whats happening with the ferret and bunny..they can run around below if the ferret doesn't bully it out etc etc. . It didn't stay around too long before trying its luck with the dogs. . Here's a little video clip.. http://vid1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc414/vincevoxbox/Son%20of%20Chuckles%20bolts%20a%20beaty%20under%20metal%20sheets_zpsmbnx5ko4.mp4 Not a bad starter for a young kit..I will hold him back till after xmas now and see how he develops..But so far so good as they say..fingers crossed he might make the grade. It was way too hot for the dogs and ferrets in a box by 11am So I headed back down the hill for a brew and a catch up with the farmers and keepers...its a quiet year for the bunnies this season as there isn't a lot around.. But I'm well happy if you can catch a few without the nets and have a nice easy day without going for big numbers and trying to beat scores etc etc. I think I shall call him " Jacker ". Yes you must be right Kenneth... Everyone knows my ferrets are Jackers . . . I can only dream of one day owning one of them that want to stay down a warren and find bunnies instead of these poor excuses for workers. I was going to ask Shauny Shaun for some new blood and beg him to show me where I've been going wrong all these years.. Quote Link to post

Guest vin
Enjoyed that Vin Whats the reason for holding the hob back till Christmas? ATB Dave I'm going to go steady with him and let him mature mentally a little more before I get him in deep with the big bucks.. I know he has the tools and the strength but he's still a big daft baby...A few heavy sessions and good kickings can soon create a Jacker...lol. If I didn't already have a few good working hobs I would use him and go steady on him..But fortunately at the moment I have some good grafters from the last few seasons. Quote Link to post
Phil Lloyd 10,738
That is a good attitude,... Too many promising young ferrets/working dogs,..have been wastefully messed up, by giving them, too much graft,... too soon... Edited September 30, 2015 by Phil Lloyd Quote Link to post
