Ideation 8,216
Seen all manner of gun dogs used for it. They will pretty much hunt anything, it depends on the dog, what happens if they catch up to it! Quote Link to post
bullmastiff 615
Several years ago the local keeper had a springer that would take the occasional fox. He was a big lad for a springer mind so don't know if a Cocker could handle it? They may be keen to start but a quick nip would put most off. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Fairly sure there is a member on here that once upon a time had a cocker that would kill foxes. I believe she may have been dug to a few times as well. . . . . . Quote Link to post
Guest foxpack
My dad bred spaniels for over 30 years and I've corrupted a few in my time.1 was an outstanding Fox finder.he would get stuck in to 1 no problem.the problem was he would put them up and hunt them for 100 yards.pull off and start looking for sumthing else .they won't line hunt .Just up and out then move on.no good for us .but if your doing small spots where foxes are they will lift them fast due to springers or cockers fast approach to work. 5 Quote Link to post

bird 9,948
anyone ever used or seen pure cockers bushing & hunting old reynard??? atb cbx I would have the thought a fox is the last thing you want it bump into, more so if you want it for birds and rabbits being honest . I done fair bit of beating over the years , and most want gundog breeds soft mouth, few other beathers had jacks and labs, but these were just used for beating nothing else. I suppose if your not botherd if it got hard mouth ok, cockers + springer's can be very head strong just in training them, so most guns kept it simple as they could with them . lol 1 Quote Link to post
spindolero 1,111
i'd be more than happy if they hunted/flushed them to gun or lurcher (in NI & ROI) on a regular basis. some of the best hounds are total sh1tbags at the sharp end, but you wouldn't be without them might be a nice party trick to have a spaniel that gets stuck in but you wouldn't expect it of them. 1 Quote Link to post
brainy 223
Most defiantly will bush them out of cover , not sure about hunting them up at a distance , don't think they would straight line them for a long time , like a hound or terrier would 1 Quote Link to post
chrisbullx 2,541
Yes I was thinking more of flushing to lurchers lads rather than tackle the fox preban of course atb cbx Quote Link to post
bird 9,948
Yes I was thinking more of flushing to lurchers lads rather than tackle the fox preban of course atb cbx yeh suppose they would , as they trained to flush any quarry , but hold on a flush (don't go in) so be it a bird,rabbit/hare or a fox they knock it out of cover, I have thought a couple of jacks might be better as they smaller and game little dogs Quote Link to post
chrisbullx 2,541
my only concern with using terriers they will drop in on old Charles bird atb cbx 2 Quote Link to post
bird 9,948
my only concern with using terriers they will drop in on old Charles bird atb cbx do you mean go to earth ? , maybe x terrier something with bit of leg might be ok. Quote Link to post
chrisbullx 2,541
Yes mate you don't a couple of terriers in a earth at the same time could end up with a seriously injured or dead dog atb cbx Quote Link to post
cantona 310
My mates springer bushes everything but when it's a fox you can tell straight away , it yaps and cries and marks them a lot stronger than bunnies, maybe because its round earths with terriers but it certainly is its preferred quarry. 1 Quote Link to post
