I have found some lovely traps coated in black paint, many were done a long time ago to go into the inglenook or on the pub wall. What I have found is that the paint often (but not always!) has protected the underlying trap from corrosion. I have used NitroMors to remove paint, but modern paints, and red oxide and Hammerite in particular, are very stubborn to remove properly.

That's the stuff I used but after three goes and power washing it of each time I gave up and asked round who could do a bit of sand blasting for me and being honest it cleaned it up nicely and left a good finish on it

According to my brother-in-law; leaving the painted trap (or old fishing reel as that is what we were discussing) for a week in a sealed tub with some Acetone, not covered, just enough to wet it, will make all the paint soft and easy to remove. The secret is to use a tub that doesn't dissolve. We've been using ice cream containers with acetone in to clean our brushes this week and that has held up to the Acetone so that should be OK.
