fat man 4,741
Lukey, if you can find a fox sette in all the brush we have here, you feel free to walk your dog to every hole. Here, the dogs find the sette or it doesn't get found. There is a difference in leting a dog run-hunt up loose and having a dog on a leash marking from 10-15 yds away,we dont or cant let terriers run amock when out for obvious reasons. 3 Quote Link to post
Mosby 355
Yes, our hunting is very different in that sense. Quote Link to post
snizle06 202
Mosby is there not a big risk of loosing terriers? Or do you use trackers on them Quote Link to post
rob284 1,682
If a dog marks it can go in, if its not interested it doesnt get to go in. If quarry has been near the earth the dog will scent before it gets to an entrance. Simple. 2 Quote Link to post
rob284 1,682
a good terrier knows 1s at home 10 - 15 yards before he even gets to the hole, and a good terrierman will be able to read the signals his dog is giving out as they approach the hole. Just the same way you will see a gundog pick up a line and let you know there's a bird about so get ready. a good terrier will do the same, and no matter the size of the hole they should find, that's what the black thing on the end of its face is for..... its called a nose and that's the thing with most terriers bred these days, there bred by individuals who think a terrier with 30-40 handy digs over it its ready to stud or pup and if a dog cant find in a rangey spot its as good as useless to most men.never heard anyone call an earth a hole before... Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Take time to re-read this thread and realise what bollocks we all talk on here .For some its obviously for internet stardom ,some know the crack and others are learning . Its funny how a thread changes when someone talks sense though . 2 Quote Link to post
howdeeposxxt 1,448
if the dog marks the earth from a distance . you enter it . the same dog on a different day may need to run through to find. yes I would say its about scenting conditions. but that don't change the fact that some dogs shine above others in the nose department. if you are out with a few terriers you tend to rely more on certain dogs for finding than others. experience comes into it but generally speaking a dog with a good nose shows this very early. as does a poor one when in company. you also need a decent owner to read the dog. as for hard terriers that's down to how you define this. ive seen dogs that could be dug to as little as once a season if they get into a situation where they are to tight to do what they want to but are to foolhardy to take a step back. not only can they be out for a season but often it can finish there working life. ive always said over hard work styles. should be classed as a fault. lets face it. you plan breed rear and enter a terrier and after a few outings its career is finished. not for me. You would class hard dog as a fault OMG you and I are on two different planets each to their own I suppose 1 Quote Link to post
chesney 5,451
Im sure the best producing dogs are hard if your alot lads when getin services its nearly always a hard type dog they go for fair enough some might stupid for taken the ateings they do but its that drive that makes alot of them decent producers of pups. 1 Quote Link to post
Mixedgrill 704
Some balls being written on here lately See all this shit I wouldn't breed from a hard dog...WHY??? Someone has went out of there way to breed that said dog..theses dogs r bred for work, so fook if they only get 5 digs a season if the dog fits ur breeding plans use it... I'd rather breed off a stupid game dog than breed from a wankie yapper just my opinion 6 Quote Link to post
